Scoop handle source, square post hole handles

Well-known member
Found a potential source for longer handles with a square end. They advertise 48", 60" and 72" handles. Most of the stores that are local to me are now stocking round ended handles.

Post Hole Digger Handles

TVR,
Thanks, it is centrally located in MO. too and the prices are right. You need to know the dimensions of the square end though to avoid having to do any shimming.

Best Regards,
Steve

what about a wheel barrel Handel??

John,
That is a possibility.
Wheel barrow handle square end on the ones I've seen are bigger than where the handle fits in the scoop. Could cut them down, but that takes time to do. I like doing projects like that, but have got too many projects as it is. Am really hoping to get more detecting time in 2011 than I got in 2010.

I've been getting my handles at True Value.I think I've seen them at Ace and also farm stores usually carry them..

My local Ace now only carries the round handles. They will special order the square end ones, but in 48 inch length only and the one's they get in need about 1/8 inch of shimming to fill the space. There is a true value not too far away. I'll have to try there.

The handle always seems to break where the wood contacts the metal edge on the scoop. The 2 holes that are drilled in the handle are to large for the bolts leaving way to much play between the wood and the metal at the top...What I've done and it seems to help is I only put a bolt in the top hole. I then went to ACE and bought a Large Hex head stainless metal screw and large stainless fender washer.I drilled a small pilot hole on the inside of the scoop into the wood towards the bottom of the handle..When the screw is tight it pulls the handle back against the edge taking the play out and seems to help the handles from breaking as they did before. Also I always keep a couple extra handles on hand .

I got my sq end post hole digger handle at an OSH store (Orchard Supply Hardware) fits perfectly about $8.

I believe that if you only put 1 bolt in near the bottom of the handle it will help.

Steve :)
