Scoop Advice

I am considering a new scoop primarily for use in the wet sand and water at beaches in Florida. Currently I have a Diamond Head, which I like, but it can get rather heavy, particularly on a long hunt. I want something lighter that can also breakdown for travel. I was considering the RTG PRO ALUMINUM 6" TRAVEL WATER SCOOP. The bucket is 6 " in diameter by 11" long, overall it is 48" in length, and weights in at 4.5 pounds. It breaks in the middle so it can fit in a suitcase. This seems like it could be a winner.

Does anyone have experience with this scoop and/or other recommendations?

I typically don't like scoops that break down because it makes a weak spot. But I will say that I have four different models from RTG and I have never had a problem. RTG knows how to build a scoop. For water hunting I like the 6" aluminum scoop w/ stainless tip. For sand hunting I like the model 700 w/ reinforced mesh. I think RTG stands behind their work. I would go for it.

The RTG's are great scoops, I have had mine several years and trust me when I say the thing has taken a beating, wet sand, rocks, shell, in the water, the scoop hold up. I agree with goodmore, I would not want one that breaks down because that will be it's weak spot. Then again maybe I just abuse my scoops more than most.

Tony, I have a two piece Aluminum 6"by 11" deep. I have used it in Rivers with rocks in Ga. all the different beaches in Fl. east and west coast, in the Carribean Islands and have never had any problems with it. The one thing I do is take it apart every so often so the salt water doesn't get it hard to pull apart. I have taken a grinder and sharpened the edge once in 4 years the sand and rocks wear away at the edge. I have hundreds of hours on this scoop. Good Luck and HH!!

I too use a two-piece RTG when traveling and have never had any problems. The bushing that fits inside the handle is what makes the joint so strong. You won't be sorry if you buy one. HH :minelab:

Thanks everyone! I decided to pull the trigger on the aluminium RTG travel scoop. However I did take to option to have them add the SS tip to it for added strength.

HH!

A very nice water scoop. I think you will be pleased. As I said in my earlier post " RTG knows how to make a scoop. " I am consistently asked where I got my scoop by people on the beach.

Tony , if you didn't already , call them back and have them add a grab handle to it . It's only $10.00 more , and you can tell them to position it any way you like. You'll want on in the water when you're digging a deep target.

Hi. I was thinking that since it is a travel scoop that breaks down into two pieces that the grab handle might not be available as an option. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Tony,
They don't list it as an option. But , if you call or email them. They will add a handle or stainless lip to any of their scoops. They told me a handle would be $10.00 more for them to weld it on. They make all their scoops in house , so they can even make you a custom scoop if you wanted. Give them a call. And No , I don't work for them. They just make a quality product. Good Luck !

I use that scoop and it works great. Grab handle is an option - I got "T" handle on mine - you'll be glad you got the SS lip also. You'll like the new scoop. gl and hh

Interesting. . . .is there a picture of what the T handle and grab handle options look like anywhere?

This is what I'm talking about. I've never seen a " T " handle.

The grab handle just lets you pull the scoop up easily while it's full of sand. In the water, you might be a foot + deep in the sand when trying to scoop a target. So you have a full scoop , plus sand getting washed on top and around your scoop as you are trying to pull it up. Trying to grip the straight pole and pull it out can be a pain. The grab handles are great ! You already added the stainless lip. Add the grab handle , and you'll have the perfect scoop !

Long ago scoops used to come with "T" handle - I got used to using it that way - had it added instead of grab handle(RTG) - it's outta the way-provides good leverage-gives a little length(depth) b/c you can pull from the very end of the handle - works for me. Good luck with whatever ya get!

The SS works better in the wet/shell mixture sand because it is heavier. The Aluminum will also work but takes more effort to dig with but in the loose sand it is great....HH
