Schooner Ernestina

The "Ernestina" was built in Essex Ma., a community well know for building hundreds of Schooners a
nd other vessels since the 1800's. This vessel is New Englands oldest fishing vessel. Here you are seeing Her, returning from across the Achusnet River / New Bedford Harbor, from Fairhaven. She had been dry docked, for Hull restoration, and being returned to New Bedford for new Masts. The Tug did an excellent job of returning Her, without too much room between the Fishing Fleet of New Bedford!
The Ernestina is the type of schooner, used in the 1930's movie, "Captains Courageous" starring Spencer Tracy and Freddie Bartholomew. They would be fished of the Grand Banks in Newfoundland, dropping multiple Dory's with fishermen using drop lines with multiple hooks. It was a hard live, for the Gloucester Mass. Fisherman.

I think I saw a movie in the past where Americans armed some schooners for fighting the British. They used hit and run tactics when fighting large ships. Thanks for posting these pictures, interesting. Fred Kelley :)
