Schooner Ardelle being built

Ron J

Active member
The photo's were taken in Feb. 2011. The Ardelle was being built as you can see. Shipwright Harold Burnham is 11th generation, building vessels on the same Family Shipyard in Essex Massachusetts. The vessel is being built from scratch, on site. Harold has his own sawmill on site.

Will the wood expand, then shrink with the various temperatures? Did you watch any of the building of this schooner? I think this is interesting, thanks for posting the pictures and story. Kelley (Texas) :)

The wood stays swelled and right. I was there when they were celebrating , laying the keel, and would drive by periodically to see the progress. Last Fall, he sailed the Ardelle to Washington D.C. And back.

Also, how often does a boat like this have to be pulled out of the water to have the hull cleaned and repainted? Kelley (Texas) :)
