Hello everyone this is my first posting,I have only been metal detecting since last year of July 2010, as I wished I would of done this hobby 20 years ago.better late then never. Not knowing anyone who done metal detecting I was on my own. With allot of research I bought the ACE 250 since it was rated no#1 for entry level detecting.I started of going to several parks, few beaches and friends yards and as GRATE FULL that I have found dozens of memorial pennies, few quarters and dimes and logged in at least 150 hours(realizing now it is not that much in the MD world). I was getting a little bit discourage with this hobby to put in so much effort and time just to find some modern coins. My girl friend said she could find more coins washing my laundry with three loads. As I told her, metal detecting has many rewards then just value of a coin, it's all about preserving the past finding that lost jewelry for someone and being involve helping the community.
After pondering about giving up on this hobby I decided to approach this like fishing. I have to do some more additional research and be patients if I was going to find the right fishing hole.So I started to read more MD forums and watching countless video and taking allot of notes.I now feel a little bit more confident where to search .One day I started the day out at this early 1900s community park at which I got permission from the ground keeper. After scanning over a very large area for 3 hours all I found was pull tabs, crushed cans and tons of foil and a few modern pennies that is it.I thought for sure I would found something. So I decided to call it quits and drive back home 20 miles. As I was going through the oldest part of town just for no reason randomly going through a subdivision I notice they were digging up the street easement to replace original drain pipe,Then I remember an article that I read that this guy driving through a older town and seen any type of road construction excavating going on he would lock up his brakes and jump out of his vehicle while still rolling to MD the dirt.Well at that moment I truly felt I was drawn to check this out even though I was really tired and hungry, I was compel to stop.I jumped out my vehicle and a little hope from the good lord my search was on, and within 5 minutes I had high tone reading 50 cents and as I dug down into the rich black turned dirt three inches I saw glimpse of shining silver and as carefully I rub the dirt off , low and behold it was 1898 Barber Quarter and as I flipped the coin over there is a slash across the face I'm not sure if I did that or a bobcat scraped it, didn't matter I was so so so thrilled of the find I just couldn't believe it.After all the hours and hours of searching and driving at all previous places I felt it paid off now, I know this hobby is for real and not just 1 in a million find maybe 1 in thousand lol .I searched for additional hour and found another silver Roosevelt dime 4 inches down and that was all. This really gave me the confident I needed to know that I may be successfully at this difficult but rewarding hobby, it takes allot of research, hard work, and practice practice practice if it was easy there would allot more people out there. I have one more post to show my humble other finds.thanks for reading.

Very nice finds......persistence paid off...congrats !!

Great story and great find. Keep at it.

Congrats, many more good finds to come for you !!

Nice finds Yukon! I started detecting last summer, and I love it. I learned that doing a little research goes a long way, and great places to hunt are closer than you think!

I ever found was a 1900. I was working this old park and was getting late when I found her. I was tired and reckless, needless to say, I put a small gash on her face like your coin only smaller. Ever since then, I have learned to be more careful. Congrats on two nice coins. John

Alright!:bouncy:Nice hunt!:garrett::detecting:Cool finds!:thumbup:Congrats on the silver!:beers:
Yeah man, I banged up a couple of Spanish silver coins from the 1700s a few years ago. I found several one time while nugget shootin'. The desert ground was like cement and I was hackin' away with my rock pick. They were deep. I hit the first couple with my rock pick while diggin' them out. Once I realized what I had I slowed way down and got alot more meticulous with my diggin'. Recovered seven more from that spot. Reales and half reales. I felt absolutely terrible about bangin' up those first two.:blowup:
Thanks for sharing!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Unless you rubbed the dirt into the slit cleaning it off, that scratch actually looks
kind of old. You may not have done that. Also, not sure if most diggers would
leave a scratch that sharp and narrow.. Maybe, but it almost looks like that was
slashed with something pretty thin and sharp. But I guess if you have a sharp
edge, it might do that.
That's one reason why I usually use my probe for popping coins up.. Hard to scratch
coins with it, being it has a rounded polished end to it.
I almost never actually use a digger, unless it's obvious I really need to dig to
find something deep.

Yeah I thought that cut looked old also. And I rarely use a digger, just probe and pop mine out with a big screwdriver.
