Scanning Leave Bags For A Missing Ring

Spanky

New member
I believe I read an article on this forum about helping someone finding a lost ring in the leaves.Well heres another story.
:jump:
Well.....my wife has a co-worker that is very sad that he lost his wedding band while doing yard work. Apparently a few weeks ago he was having lunch and reached to pick something up and his ring flew off. All the women laughed and said hey you need to get that ring sized or you will lose it! Well... being like most men it went in one ear and well......no need to say more we find enough rings to prove that.
Any how my wife asked if I could help and I said no problem. When I got to the house he had 20 bags of leaves he raked and asked if I could scan the bags which I did .......found nothing.
Well, the poor guy was really depressed and I think I made him feel worse by not finding it in one of the bags.He was 100% sure it would be in a bag.:yikes:
I'm not one to give up so I said I'd be back tomorrow to check out his yard. Figured I'd grid it and see if it shows up.Raining pretty heavy today so never had a chance to do the yard.
I'll let you know what happens.I'm using my 550.....never searched plastic bags before.I did not open the bags but scanned all around it. Anyone ever do this before? I guess its like doing an air test.

Cheers !

I would empty the leaves on To a tarp or plastic one bag at a time..and check it with the detector. I could be wrong ...by just scannin the Bag you might miss that ring. Did you check the yard area where i came off....I would. Keep us posted.

Big Red, I went back today for a second try and mentioned your idea about dumping the bags on a tarp which was a great idea.:super:

I told Dave that I'd like to scan the yard first since I checked the bags yesterday. If I did not find it in the yard we would do the bags one at a time.

Weather was getting bad yesterday it was raining and today it had snowed and was getting cold. I showed up after work at 6 pm in the dark; there was an inch of snow on the ground. Dave was eager but a little down from yesterdays try.

I was grid scanning the entire length of the yard :detecting:and on my 3rd past the 550 gave that magic sound (I love that sound). I scrapped off the snow and there it was.

I walked over to Dave and said, "Theres bad news & good news." Dave said whats the bad news ,"I said you have no coins in the yard but the good news is you have one gold ring."

Talk about happy... the guy gave me the biggest hug ! I was grinning and my wife was screaming for joy.....Dave's wife was thanking me non stop ....man I wish you could bottle that feeling.:drinking:

Dave said he walked up and down looking all day last Sunday and could not find it.

Nice way to finish the day.

Cheers !

That is a great feeling....and pat yourself on the back....Its funny more often than not .....the item lost is almost never where they think it is.....Congrats!

The trouble is - how big around are the bags? Your detector will only go as deep through the leaves as it will anywhere else. The ring could be in the middle somewhere and you could miss it completely.

If the ring is heavy you could try shaking the bags real hard to shake the ring down closer to one side then scan it. Other than that the only way is to dump the leaves out and spread them out thin enough to detect.

I was the one who recovered the ring the other day but it was just under a few wet leaves and easy to pick up.

Should have read this post first. Glad you found the ring for him. It's a good feeling. I got a big hug also when I found my friend's ring.
