I just got my XS a couple of weeks ago am am quite new to detecting. Yesterday as I was working a field and as I walked and scanned every now and then I would get a nice high pitched sound and the crosshairs would be in the white in upper right. I was working with everything x'd out except coins and jewelry, and a sens of 15 using smartfind. I would hear the sound but when I would pass back over, the sound would be gone and as i made several repeat passes i would get a beep every so often but not on every pass. Sometime as I scanned along I would get several different pitched sounds and the crosshairs would move all over the place and when I passed back over there would be nothing. I would scan again and get a sound. when I would go to pinpoint I would get several sounds in differet areas a few inches apart. I assumed there were several targets but when I would dig I would just get a rusty nail or wire, or sometimes a bullet casing. I got so I just didnt dig the first high sounds because I couldn't get a good fix on one. as I scanned back it would be gone and if i went to pinpoint I got several sounds, thought I was playing a slot machine in vegas. as I walked along I would get sometimes 8 to 10 beeps in a couple of passes from low tone to high pitched tone. but as I said when I would repass the sound would be gone, I would make seveal passes and sometime a high pitched beep would hit but again would be gone in the next pass. I would dig some but just couldn't get a precise read and sometimes couldn't find anything. I know it is operator error and am just trying to get somepointers on how to read. I did find 4 tokens and a barber dime in about two hours but spent most of my time digging rusty nails and alum caps and bullet casings. got about 10 casings and a dozen nails. As I said in my first question i tried to X out the "nail" but when I would go to detect and back to select the x would be gone from the "nail". Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Ph# would be nice as I think I could describe the problems. I am really excited about the site as it is an old tavern stage stop about 1880 and in a hay field and never been worked and I am sure there are coins all over the place, but I just can't decifer the sounds and pinpoint the right one. My dealer that I bought the XS from has never used one either so he is no help. Thanks, Ken

those high pitched ones pegging off the upper right could be hot rocks, the rest sounds like iron falses.. try backing off the sens a bit.. down to around 20 and concentrate on the solid repeatable steady tones.. keep the coil flat to the ground through the swing and turn the gain down to 5 or 6 max if you upped it.. high gain increases falsing

I doubt hot rocks, but for sure some kind of false reads. I am in a plowed hay field mostly good soil, but a lot of junk, and am having trouble just getting a repeatable signal to focus on to pinpoint and dig. but remember I a a rookie and am doing a lot of things wrong, so I sure appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Thanks Ken

My xs will false off my boot eyelets occasionally, and off my sandscoop if its in a front pocket...Got me some 20$ desert boots with no evelets..Probably iron like jim said... mine will false on twigs or if I bump a clod. But i am used to it,and seldom resweep these little highpitched "dinks".. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/csflag.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="::"> cs
