Saxon and Nexus

U.K. Howard

New member
Recently, whilst doing a spot of Googling, I happened across a couple of makes of metal detector of which I was previously unaware - in particular, 'Saxon' (easytreasure.co.uk - Essex Metal Detectors) and 'Nexus' (nexusdetectors.com). The Saxon website mentions that they have been building detectors since the early 1970s, and the Nexus website says that the metal detectors they build are the 'deepest, most powerful detector', stating that one of their models:

Nexus Standard SE exhibits excellent depth penetration and discrimination accuracy by been capable to detect a single coin (30mm) at 18" (45 cm, bottom of a hole) depth under ground or a small silver coin (18mm) at 12.5" (32cm, corner test under compact soil) under ground.

I am fairly new to the hobby of metal detecting and know very little about all the various makes and models available, up until now having seen machines from Garrett, Whites, XP, Minelab, Tesoro, C Scope, Discovery, Scanmaster, Viking, Laser, and a few others being advertised by the likes of Regton and Joan allen, but never Saxon or Nexus. I was just wondering if anyone reading this post has any personal experience of using machines by either, or both of these manufacturers, and what your opinions of their performance may be. Obviously, if they are considered super-fantastic, then it couldn't hurt to know, so that I can pencil them into my wish list for future consideration as and when funds allow - such as after finding my first buried hoard (well, I can always dream!). Incidentally, having found these two manufacturers of which I was previously unaware, are there any other maunfacturers whose machines do not appear in mainstream catalogues?

I don't know much about the Saxon detector, i have always thought that it was a low cost starter detector.

The Nexus is a deep detector, but not the sort of detector that you would use daily,.
A friend who has one told me that he uses his every day detector to find a good site and when he does find a good site he then brings the Nexus out to get the deep targets. He has told me that you need to be able to adjust it correctly to get the best out of it and that you can find your self digging coke cans at 16". I hope that this helps. Les in the UK

Hi Howard, don't be fooled by all the hype some manufacturers claim

Stick with the proven makers

Minelab, Garrett, Whites, Tesoro (Laser) Fisher, to name a few.

Good Luck with whatever you choose.

Leslie has hit the nail on the head by saying to Stick with the proven makers. You don't need the deepest detectors to make great finds in the UK i have used Tesoro, Fisher and Minelab for years and i have made some amazing finds.
I have personally found that the deeper the detector goes the more crap and deep iron you find your self digging.
