Saturday with the ID Edge

Went out Saturday with a friend just driving till we found a promising spot. And that we did. Came across a private camp with nobody around. So went across the street and asked the lady if she knew who we could talk to. She sure did!! He lived two doors down from her and we were off!! He was out in his yard and told us to go ahead. He said a workers son goes in there and that's all. So off we went. My very first find was the dog tags. They were in the sand on the beach. Just called the number on the tags today and boy were they surprised!!! The tags are going home tomorrow. The beach had some new stuff on it and was heavily sanded in so went to another part of this huge camp. I ended up with 2 mercs, a 1917 Canadian dime and the 1943 quarter.

My friend got a merc, 2 silver rings and also a bunch of change. We BOTH got 7 wheat cents. The ring I got was junk. Sure sounded gold and I thought it was. Saw a mark on the inside bottom and kept teasing him. LOL joke on me, it was just a flaw in the metal.

This camp has a lot of potential and if this stupid rain stops maybe I can grab some more silver before the snow buries it!!

Hi Scubadetector.

How deep are you typically getting with the Ecge? I know it all depends on soil conditions, but I was just curious. I have a Coinstrike now but I've rented from a dealer the Edge in the past. I really liked it a lot. I have an old farm site I'd like to explore more in the Spring. The soil is sandy beneath the grass. I'm not sure how far anything may have sunk already, but I'd like to give it another try. I used the Coinstrike on it and got ALOT of iron tones, with some mixed high tones. Thanks.

Randy, I have both detectors. I like them equally but the Edge is up to 1" deeper in air tests on various coins. I compared them in the field one time and the Edge seems to give a slightly better signal on the deep small brass stuff I detected. The Edge weighs less too. The C$ has more settings to play with, I like that part. Overall, they are just about neck and neck. My deepest find with the Edge was a quarter size brass flat button at 9.5" using the 10" coil, gave a jumpy 4 tone signal.

Hey Jabbo.

I see you also posted a reply for the message I left about the old farm site I was at. I was wondering how you would go about searching it if you were only getting a lot of low tones with some mixed in high tones? Would you dig all the low tones, just to get rid of any junk that may be there, and then see if you get any higher tones? It would seem very time consuming, BUT if it would help distinguish the higher tones better I would definitely do it. Thanks.

Randy

Will tell you that I have NO idea. I have had it out for less than 10 times. I did get a religous medal I forgot to post that was deeper than any coin. I almost gave up on it. It gets pretty deep but I used to own a deeper detector. I guess I will take a tape measure with me and dig slowly on some targets so I can let you know.

Randy, You will get lots of mid tone and low tone signals when searching close to the farm house or other buildings, can't dig them all, too much trash. But you might try cherry picking only the high tones in the beginning. Moving away from buildings you should get less trash signals. I have very little experience detecting in yards so my input might not be the best for you. But this year I've been searching in corn fields here in Jersey and had good results finding at least a dozen 1700's Colonial and 1800's U.S. large pennies, plus some older silver, IH pennies, musket balls and crotal bells with very little trash. The thing I learned is close to the farm house/buildings is tons of trash signals, gardens are good, crop fields are good, the edge of woods are good. Jabbo
