Saturday hunt at a Church circa 1900

Well, I got permission from the pastor at my church to hunt and took advantage of my son being with the grandparents yesterday. I was out for about 3 hours, probably hunted for 2. The pastor and his kids stopped by and I gave them a quick lesson in metal detecting. One of them even found a clad penny! I found one merc, a pocket spill of 5 wheaties, a couple of buttons, one of them with what I believe is a bunch of gold gilt left on it. I also found a couple whatzits. One of them shined up really nice, it's too light to be lead, not sure exactly what it is.

I ended up only being able to make one pass on each side of the front walk, and then another pass one sweep away from the first on the "better" side of the walk. (i.e. where I found the merc and pocket spill) There's a pretty nice tree on that side of the walk so I'm looking forward to going back. I also found a depression where an old tree used to be, so I'll check that out the next time I'm out.

Enjoy and thanks for looking.

Well, I'm on vacation this week, and I decided to head back to that church that popped a merc for me. I was not disappointed. If I understand things correctly, they do not use this church much during the summer, instead they use a smaller one that is easier to cool. So for the past XX years they haven't used it during the summer. I believe this is why I'm not finding too many modern coins, and lot of wheaties and a Barber Dime!!! Yep, today I pulled a Barber and a Rosie from the ground. Also, another blob of what I think is silver solder. It came out of the ground shiny like the silver dimes. I had to cut things short in the "hot" area that has given me the Barber, Merc, and Rosie dimes, as I noticed that my plugs from a couple weeks ago weren't doing so hot. We've been pretty parched of late so regardless of how careful I am, apparently I cannot cut plugs into the front part of this Church's yard without the plugs going belly up. It rained a small bit last night so the ground was somewhat damp, but only about 4 inches down though. I ended up doing one pass in several different locations around the church to limit the number of holes I dug in one area. I also kept to the shaded more wet areas once I noticed my older plugs. Anyway, I think I'm going to have to wait awhile to hit this place again, so the seated dime will have to wait!! Enjoy the pics!!
