Saturday and Sunday hunts

Eric in RI

New member
Hey all, sorry I haven't been posting lately. Been doing a lot of overtime the last few weeks and haven't really had the chance to hunt. I was able to squeeze in a 2 hour hunt before it got dark on Saturday night. Decided to go down the road to the park / baseball field again. Pickings were really slim. I had 3 wheaties and a couple nickels in my pouch. I started hunting in front of the bleachers where I was convinced that I did a thorough job of hunting. I came across a high 60's / low 70's signal. Very soft and depth showed 8". Dug a 5" plug, stuck the pro-pointer in the hole and it went off faintly. Dug another 2 inches out and was rewarded with a 1908 Indian. I was psyched as this spot I pounded on a lot of my hunts. I had to really go slow in this area as there is a lot of iron everywhere at all depths. Stuck it out for another 15 minutes and then the mosquitos started annoying me, so I left. I had to admit, although it was a penny kind of day, I still had a lot of fun :)

Sunday I got out for 1 1/2 hours before dark at the same spot I was at on Saturday. This time I worked my way near short stop and 3rd base. Now this particular area is near a fence with a gate that leads into another part of the park. I've found many old coins here in the past. Most of what is left for signals is foil and beaver tabs. Finding a coin here is usually impossible. Well I decided to hit the area again and go really really slow. I was going so slow that I swear I saw an nightcrawler move faster than I did LOL! I started concentrating on the foil hits that rang in the upper 30's / lower 40's. Usually if I can isolate the signal with all the iron grunts, I can get a better signal. I did fairly well that way and my rewards were 4 regular jefferson nickels, 1 zincoln penny, a 1945 silver war nickel, a buffalo nickel that still needs to be cleaned and a silver crucifix pendant that is marked 925 italy. I have to admit, going really slow definitely works for me in my pounded sites. My other metal detector never would've found this stuff. The Buffalo and the war nickel were at least 7"+ The cross pendant registers in the mid 50's with an air test. Still no more gold, but I know its there, just a matter of time before I get it :)

Sorry for the lack of pictures of the finds. I will try to get pics posted tomorrow. HH :)

I hope the upload works from my smartphone. My apologies for the picture quality. The eagle item has me intrigued. I have yet to clean it. It is not silver, although the flash on my smartphone makes it appear that it is. I think it is made of brass. Still have to clean the dirt. I get so lazy when it comes to cleaning relics :smoke:

Good info and nice finds, Eric! Thanks for posting them. I like that eagle- have you figured out what it is?
