We're in the process of selling the mother-in-laws house, so I was up there putting in a new garage door opener, lights, and GFCI outlets. I took the E-trac with me because the next door neighbor told me I could hunt his yard.........gave me a little incentive to get the work done faster!

Had about three hours to hunt in the afternoon and this yard was one of the best yards I have ever hunted...........coins everywhere with the four silvers: 1899 Barber Quarter, 1911-D Barber Dime, and two Mercs: 24-D and 36-D; two Injuns 1887 and 1893, a no-date Buff, (22) wheaties (most in the teens and twenties, including a 13-S), an old dog tag, an a real nice Palmolive Soap Token.

I'm gonna have to go back, as I never made it into the back yard, plus the next door neighbor gave me permission to hunt her yard too!!!

Wow! What a fantastic hunt! I am long overdue for a hunt like that. Congrats on all of your finds.

Very nice finds! :clapping:

The round thing with the bar across it is a great coat weight. I'm not sure if they were used in everyday civilian cloths but they were used in great coats of Union Army Officers.

Jim love the coins WOW..... Look at the coat weight !!!!! that's old !!!!!

Very nice! What is the round object with a small metal bar across the hole? Is that the coat weight mentioned?
I have found several of those and ended up throwing them away :(

Wow, very nice finds. congrats

Holy cow Jim. I'd hold off a while on the sale until you've worked the whole neighborhood. Fantastic finds. Thanks for the pictures.

Yes, the circular item with the bar was sown into the hem of those 3/4 length coats. It was to keep the coat straight and not allow the hem to curl up.

I know they were used during the Civil War and I'm pretty sure they didn't come on the scene in the 1860s. So its sort of impossible to date them. The ones I've found are typically made of lead. The first one I found I thought it was an overall button until someone came along and told me what they really were. There are always a few of these found at DIV in the camp sites that existed around Brandy Station, Va.

I really got a kick out of that comment............
