Sat. & Sun. Ghost Town FInds (pic heavy)

Hit a nearby ghost town Saturday and was conducting my methodical AWP (Aimless Wandering Pattern). Time was passing, and there was no way I would hit my profit point on this dig unless I could identify a MPS (Miner Pocket Spill) in my TRZ. I located a bottle dump and did some digging to see if there were any that they hadn't smashed. Nope. tick...tick...
Then I decided to check the surrounding area & banks of the dry wash. I found an area just below the bottle dump where I started getting lots of big iron and some nice 80's readings. Boom, baby! One of my first digs was what appeared to be a copper sexual aid...what the frell?

On closer inspection, it turned out to be a copper flashlight. Cool. Next, I dug a 1948 NM License Plate.

Then a Skeleton Key, the brass face, indicator, and spring to an 1890s scale, and an early Yale padlock. I'm having fun, now!

Here's the area that I was digging in and a shot of the bottle dump just above it::

Well, this went on for a while, and I was running out of daylight, so I decided to come back on Sunday with my hunting buddy:

I was kinda dragging at first, then switched to coins mode on the AT Pro to do a little cherry picking. I started getting some strong coin signals which turned out to be copper specimens. Well, one of them looks like it has gold throughout it (and a couple more that I found later do, too). I'm not sure about that - we have gold mica here, and it definitely isn't that, and it doesn't seem to be brittle like Pyrite. I'll have to find a spot that I can get a good scratch for the acid test. Anyways, I'm getting quite engaged in the hunt at this point! It's slow going, as the old cabin ruin, just up the hill, had shed it's iron roof and it has permeated the wash, along with all the usual junk. I was going REALLY slow, picking out the faint peeps. I dug one of those and, dang, disappearing target. Found it again, same thing. I was about to move on, but decided to give it a last try. Here is the result:

Well, I had to sit down at this point, heh. Coins have been pretty elusive up there, aside from a few modern pocket spills and Wheats.

Here are some of the other finds. I also brought home around 25# of junk iron and aluminum. All in all, my favorite hunt yet - I love the mix of relics, gold, coins - the ghosts were in very good spirits, and so was I!!

I guess it goes without saying that I'll be spending some more time up in ghost territory.
Sorry for rambling on & Best of Luck in the Hunt to ALL!!

Lots of finds in those hunts.
Congrats !

William, I am enjoying your ghost town posts and great photo spreads. Your lookout is doing a great job, too.

"That animal" is the dreaded Tree Tigger. By the time you spot one, you're already as good as dead!

Quite a variety of finds. Good pics also.

Hi William,

I'm up north of you in Colorado. I really enjoy your ghost town hunts. Thanks for sharing and all the great photos.

I do have a difficult question. How do you handle the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 ?

Are the ghost towns you visit on private land?
Have you paid off the local BLM agent?
Are you the local BLM agent?
Are you unconcerned with the ARPA ?

I ask because I've located several old railroad sidings from abandoned rail lines and I'm studying how to proceed.

Thanks, keep up the great work.

Great looking hunts there despite that vicious looking predator!

A real ghost town as the movie? :drool:guauuu! I come trembling just thinking about it ... of emotion
Good stories and great pictures, thank you very much
un saludo

Great post! I enjoyed all of it, especially the picture of the dreaded Tree Tigger! I love seeing pictures of the NM country I have come to love and miss. I consider New Mexico my home state even though I wasn't born there :)

It's been a while since I visited. The last time, I drove through the worst snow storm in 100 years on my way north to Colorado. I finally got off the Interstate and descended using dirt roads. The experience will be imprinted on my mind 'til the day I die. Beautiful high country! At one point, turning around the bend, I met up with a wolf. It looked blue in the snow! Talk about a mystical quasi-religious experience!

Anyway, great Barber dime!

Thanks, pulltabMiner! I've lived in a bunch of places, but I love wandering in New Mexico. There are so many micro climates, as I was reminded when I got stuck this winter on an icy Gila NF road with a cracked oil pan, heh. It had been in the 50s in town. The other day, it was in the high 80s in town and I headed up north of Pinos Altos into the mountains and found myself in an Aspen grove with a carpet of Lupine and other alpine flowers in bloom. Gotta say, I love the ghost towns best of all, just enjoy the solitude and sense of history and all the oddball finds! Gotta get another post together after tomorrows hunt.
