SAT speed.

Hi everyone,
Thought I'd put this in a new thread. I was reading the manual and it said that turning up the SAT can reduce target depth in certain conditions. How come? I just thought it maintained a background threshold hum.
Probably a silly question I know, but I'm new at this.
John

John, "SAT" refers to "Self-Adjusting Threshold." What the SAT circuit does is to RAISE or LOWER the level of the threshold sound, as needed, to keep the threshold more or less steady. If some circumstance (usually ground minerals) reduces the threshold sound, the SAT circuit BOOSTS it higher. Conversely, if something raised the threshold sound, the SAT circuit would act to lower it back to normal. THUS, with ALL detectors employing SAT, using too slow a searchcoil sweep speed, or, too high an SAT speed, will result in slight loss of depth. Now, if your STOPPED your coil over a target, the SAT circuit would reduce the target signal back to "normal," in effect, tuning out the target. Hope this helps; HH Jim

Jim,I am still learning my MXT and the SAT is one part that still confuses me. Are you saying that the SAT is only adjusted until you hear the slight hum, and this will be higher or lower based on the ground mineralization? Also, are there times when you would want to adjust this higher, beyond the slight hum or go silent? Does the MXT do this automatically? Thanks for your insight. Bruce

Read page 22 of the manual

Bruce, SAT speed, and the intensity of the threshold, sound are different things. The threshold sound is that sound controlled by the "bottom" knob on your MXT, the one marked "Threshold." You can raise or lower the level of the threshold sound at will. The best setting for most circumstances (especially prospecting) is when the level of "threshold" sound is set to be BARELY AUDIBLE. YES, you can turn it to silent, but if you do so too far into the silent, faint signals may well be ignored. SAT is difrent; it is a special circuit which READJUSTS the threshold sound whenever some circumstance causes the threshold sound to change. This is most common when the ground is irregular in heighth, or if the level of mineralization varies considerably from one point to the next. If you STOP the coil over a target, the SAT circuit will tune it out. Hope this helps; HH Jim

For anyone thats new with the MXT I suggest leaving the SAT at the preset mark and adjust the threshold to the barely audible level recommended by Jim. Until you learn the sounds of faint targets (small nuggets) and become able to distinguish them from the changes in threshold caused by high or variable ground mineralization, adjusting the SAT will gain you nothing. It takes mnay many hours to learn and understand a sensitive gold machines responses in the bad ground where gold is found. If things get too bad then simply use the hypersat settings, thats what its there for.

HH and good luck

Tom
