Sardis Lake Ms.

Well, I have had a permit to hunt Sardis Lake beaches for almost a year, and figured while the water is still low, I would give it a shot. I got there about 2pm today and hunted till 5pm. Totals were 2 nickels, 3 Zn pennies, a dinosaur, and a bunch of pultabs. The targets were sparse enough to put on the 10 X 14 DD which was fully capable of finding bits of "canfetti" at 18"!! I have decided a pinpointer is next on my list. Garrett 1350 $500, monetary gains from this trip $ .13, dragging my 81 year old father along and watching him get a kick out of watching me dig up a bunch of junk... PRICELESS!!

PRICELESS is absolutely the correct description, Joe:thumbup:

Wish my Dad were still here to be with me and enjoy this wonderful hobby.

Savor Every Moment!

Yea, it was a great day!!

Looks to me like someone else had recently hunted there and "disked" out pulltabs. Too bad, as that is the easiest way to leave gold rings behind for us Garrett guys.

I agrree, I dug everything. The coins were at the waters edge, which makes me wonder what is out there. Rings maybe, just waiting for someone that has the right machine?? I think I am going to go price a sea hunter... here we go again....

If you are a "Freshie", Joe, consider one of the VLF water units that have DISC capability. Sea Hunter is a PI unit and as such the DISC capabilities ARE limited.

I am a "freshie", what others are available? What ever happened to the Beach Hunter AT4??

...is defunct as yesterdays news. Good detector, wish I had one. But Garrett has nothing like it in the current lineup - just the Sea Hunter, which is a PI unit. To get an AT-4, you'll have to go to the very used market and finding them is like finding hens teeth.

If you want to discriminate in fresh water with a more current model, you gotta go to:

- Tesoro: Tiger Shark. A goodie; Ive got one.
- Fisher: The venerable Aquanaut 1280-X.
- Whites: various iterations of the "Beach" models, ie, "Hunter", "Master", etc. Basically, Classic series detectors in a
waterproof case.
- MineLab Excalibur: clunky and pricy, but the only one that could be called suitable for either salt or fresh.
- Detector Pro: The Headhunter's, which have the electronics in the headphones.

I'd go on the lookout before the season comes in. tyr all the fourm Classifieds and post a WTB ad, too. Any time you can DISC over NON-DISC, it's worth it.

Thank you! I am going to start researching the ones you listed. Maybe there is life after Garrett???

I admit to knowing nothing about it and its niche. Care to elaborate, Bill, for us dummies - okay, this dummy!?

The Infinium is a PI detector WP to 200 ft and has both a limited disc. (pulse delay adj.) and two tone audio. It will signal for low conductors & high conductors. It will go deeper than any VLF I've tested in mineralised ground (this includes the Excalibur) and will ID to basically it's full depth. If you're looking for gold jewellry it will ID most coins (tone break at zinc penny), silver, brass, large iron (includes bigger nails) as high conductors. It doesn't have perfect ID but it doesn't seem to vary the ID with depth. All the VLF's I've used/tested will ID even silver, at depth, as iron. They will also ID big iron as silver. The Infinium won't. For gold hunting it is, in many respects, a superior detector. It does, however, have it's own problems. One of these is the audio. It is essentially an all-metal detector, so will signal on everything. It will also signal on targets with hi-lo, lo-hi.. all day long. After a while it gets kinda overwhelming. It is also EXTREMELY sensitive. I have a 3 grain gold nugget that the 10x14" DD coil will pick up (there's something like 480 grains in an ounce). This is more sensitive than most VLF detectors. ..Willy.
