Heading to Sanibel Island for a week with the in-laws. Any body know about this area.? Worth bringing the Excal? Des in Buffalo, NY

Supposedly Sanibel is having a major problem with RED TIDE. Dead fish and smelly algae litter the beach.
Local TV news did a special on it yesterday

Sanibel and all the beaches in Lee county and all Northen beaches in Collier county have very bad Red Tide for about a week now with no end in site.

It's the worst red tide in some time, dead fish everywhere!
Absolutely awful!!

But during normal times you can do good on Sanibel. Find the areas that attract the most people and just work it. The red tide will make you stay to detecting on shore and you will have to dodge dead fish and the stink, but it can be done. Bummer that the red tide is happening during your stay. Normally the water is clear and nice. I would bring my detector though, you can always find some excuse to hunt !!!!!!!

Red tide showing up on Lee County beaches

Feb 13, 2013 |

Red tide victims are showing up again on Lee County beaches and in nearshore waters.

Bob Wasno, education and resource coordinator at FGCU's Vester Field Station, was shark fishing with University of Miami scientists Wednesday and emailed The News-Press that

They have no idea how much longer the red surf will continue. Man, I'd go somewhere else if it isn't gone by the time you are to head that way.

Red Tide has been on these beaches since last summer. Then we got Sandy and high waves.... then Red Tide.... then back to school vacations ended and cooler water. In the water has gotten pretty cleaned up. Might be a little choppy now as well with our normal winter movement. You have the right machine..... personally ive not been hunting much deeper than waist deep. They say it just affect people mostly with respertory problems..... but it sure wasnt good for fish. My miliatry training tells me .... if its killing the wild life and keeping the birds away..... its not healthy for you either. If you can stand the smell of bad clam choder, dont mind your eyes burning, the smokers coff, and a running nose .... jump right in. Id still bring the Xcal..... it does excellent in the wet sand, shallow water, and dry sand. You have every thing to gain.... nothing to loose. Plus you will get to meet several others hunting .... trust me on that. Sometimes dry sand hunting is just as good as water hunting in the winter.... everyone comes to lay out, but doesnt get in the water..... except at what we call the mommy line.
