May I ask why you got rid of it? I've been planning to buy one when they start making them again. Thanks, Skip

They have had a connector problem with their coils now for almost a year. Tesoro claims their "supplier" stopped supplying them with the connectors. This is obviously a problem part - and should be covered by their "lifetime" warranty... However according to Tesoro, this is the end users fault (yeah right) and it won't be covered by warranty --IF-- they ever get a new connector.

Hows that "lifetime" warranty working out now?

I find it curious that Tesoro has the money to continually market their products, including, but not limited to, adding "accessories" for purchase to their web site - yet - they obviously have no money, and or time, to resolve this long outstanding problem with their products which they have failed to address for a year now.

They have "shot themselves in the foot" with this situation. I know that being made in the USA means alot, but the Japanese or even the Chinese could have solved this problem in no time.

Seems strange that other manufacturers of water detectors can continuously pump out water machines with water proof connectors and Tesoro cannot.
Cannot they buy and use the same connectors? Is there more to the story that meets the eye? Are they trying to make sure all current and old stock SH & TS are sold before
they introduce the new Mako Shark and Reef Shark?

OK I know nothing about the Tesoro underwater machines but I did work in the electronics industry as a parts supplier and have even worked over seas in China so I have some first hand knowledge of how things work.

First I am not sure a Japanese or Chinese company would of solved this any faster. The electronic parts world is driven by demand. If the producer of the connector has no or little demand they stop making the part. I doubt Tesoro sells enough of any product to even register on the radar screen for the big connector manufactures. There problem is they have all these machines with one style connector and can not get it. They can not make a connector and they can not change to a different connector that is available since it will not work with the machines they have already produced. Believe it or not this is a problem that faces many small electronic companies all the time. Demand is driven by larger companies and when the large companies stop needing a part that part goes away and the parts manufactures could car less about small companies like Tesoro or Whites or Fisher or Garrett or Minelab. In the world of electronics these companies combined mean nothing to the large parts manufactures. So as a small company you need to be very careful on the parts you choose. It is very easy to get in this situation and like I said it happens to small companies all the time. Sometimes it even puts them out of business.

This is the truth and reality of being a small company that uses electronic parts. So I would give Tesoro some slack. I can almost guarantee if they could get the part they would. It is my guess it is either out of production or in limited production and there are no substitutes available. They may have to go to a completely different connector which means all of the current machines would need to be modified to work with the new connector. Give them a break and wish them some luck on finding what they need.

For the sake of argument, that still does not answer my post below.

"Seems strange that other manufacturers of water detectors can continuously pump out water machines with water proof connectors and Tesoro cannot.

Metal Detectors are just a small part of their business from what I gather:

Tesoro Electronics Inc
Products:

Manufactures electronic or magnetic field, light or heat detection apparatus; manufactures measuring & controlling devices Manual or electronic hematology differential cell counters, Counters, Electronic counters, Metal detectors, Electronic columns, Electronic measuring probes, Chart recorders, Digital readout recorders, Graphic recorders, Magnetic tape recorders

The connector is on the coil - not the machine - the coils are interchangeable - hence no modification required. If Tesoro truly wanted to stand behind their product and satisfy the-ever-growing-list-of-unsatisfied-customers, they'd put out a new coil, period. It can be even simpler than that - reverse engineer the connector via china. All day long, no problem. But hey - Tesoro does not care. They've already been paid, and that lifetime warranty is only as good as the paper its printed on.

You have probably "hit the nail on the head" with this post, and it does probably describe the situation, but it has been a long time of non-production now. I'm just thankful that my machine has no issues. I feel sorry for those who do have the problem and can't get a repair.

When you design a product you pick your part. The connectors the others are using must still be available. If Tesoro could use that connector they would of a long time ago. It is not the same design and would absolute all detectors they have already sold so changing connectors is not something they want to do lightly. As far as how big they are trust me in the world of electronics they are nothing. I do not mean that in any way to be disrespectful just they have no where near the volume to make any electronic parts manufacture make parts just for them. Will not happen. They other guys that make underwater detectors just got lucky and picked a part that is still in production. If the connector White's or Garret or Fisher or Minelab were to go out of production they would all be in the same boat as Tesero.

Bryanna hits it very well.

Tesoro built a large part of their reputation on supporting their equipment essentially for life. That entire life cycle support concept means that the connectors used for future production need to match what has been delivered already. If you just use the same connectors other manufactures use now; when something breaks, you throw away the coils and detectors that people (me included) are using and buy a new one.

Tesoro is in the process of developing the processes for manufacturing their own connector.

Even though it is taking a while to get the form fit and function replacement ready to produce, I have to applaud the commitment to making sure they support compatibility with the water proof products they have already been delivered. That shows a huge commitment to customers ... and I hope it does not put them out of business in the process of maintaining that commitment!
Cheers,
tvr

I worked for a company that had a very small section that made connectors. Most people have no idea of the cost of producing a new connector. We made a lot of custom connectors for the military missle program and just tooling alone could run as high as $50,000 per tool. I wish Tesoro the best of luck.

Tesoro isn't the only company having problems in getting electronic parts for their detectors...... it's all across the board on various types of parts. I believe the Tiger Shark is a very good fresh water detector and I'd buy another one in the future when they get the parts problem issue ironed out....

The Tiger Shark is a great detector. I own 2 of them and 1 Excal. I use the TS for fresh and the Excal for salt. They will get it straightened out, they are good people with an excellent product.

Best regards,
Steve

I Totally agree!! :)

I know that it is expensive to retool something, so I wish Tesoro all the best in their effort. Fortunately I kept my demo Tiger Shark. I have high regard for Tesoro and it's line of metal detectors The Golden uMax is one of my favorites. Happy hunting everyone !
