Sand Shark ?????

Dose anybody have a Tesoro Sand Shark PI , Dos it run smooth in Black Sand , I know a PI is post to run over Black Sand and not see it , But dos it false????
And how Deep will it go in mineralized soil ?? I have some fresh water Lakes with Black Sand on the west coast, Thanks all , Mickfin

not used a sand shark but all the beach PI's will work in black sand might have to adjust pulse timing if its real bad and that will by default cut out smaller stuff like small rings etc, having said that check out Eric Fosters papers on pulse machines i recon he knows more than i ever will

most problems seem to happen if the sand is not consistent so if its all black it will see through it better than if its like a marble cake if you see what i mean?

i found emi a bigger problem if near high voltage power lines that drives them crazy.

but check out Eric's stuff ( EDIT) don't know if i can post this but i just did

Just purchased a new Sand Shark Any tips on this machine? i have a garrett infinium but would like to know is some one out there has some experience to share

Sand Shark is pretty smooth over the black sand. If you are over wet sand and sweeping fast, you can get some falsing as a sweep enters an area of high concentration of black sand. Slow the sweep down and it is fine. You also get deeper with a relaxing, medium to slow sweep; so don't hurry it. In the water with the water drag, you won't be sweeping it too fast.

I normally hunt the Sand Shark with the volume at max and the threshold about 10 o'clock or slightly above 10 towards 11 o'clock; where ever it gives a very low but audible threshold sound. I run the volume at maximum since it is easy to raise the coil for a shallow or big target to cut down loud signals and lower it again to listen for a slight change on a small and or deep target. I run the pulse width a little higher than the preset mark. I've tried the pulse width at max and did not see a lot of difference in depth. I like VCO mode. Normal mode does seem to slightly stretch the time of the threshold rise, but VCO adds some pitch change that helps me notice a target a little better. If you get one try both modes for a while and see what you like.

Thanks TVR, all this helps i have had a lot of experience on several different machines but every little bit of info helps, we never stop learning, it seems there is always something new. Just got to love this sport and i have been doing it for thirty some years

Thanks

Hey Digger, let me know how you like it, I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a Sandshark myself and maybe I just need that little kick to get me over the top.

Well it just arrived today did a little testing with it, it seems to perform well and just like it was said to do, the real test will be next week when i will spend two weeks on the west coast. I will keep you informed on how i do there.

Digger 45 (and all),
Don't know if you have used a PI before ... if not, try some wet sand hunting for practice before getting into the water. Listen for double blips as the coil passes a target. If you X the target or walk around it, it gives a pronounced double blip along one axis but not the other. It is a pretty good give away for long thin iron such as hair pins and nails. I did dig one chain that sounded a bit like that too, just wasn't so pronounce and gave a bit of a double blip from most directions. I thought I'd dig an iron blob, but it surprised me with some silver. If in doubt dig. When you get confident in what you are hearing, you may want to not dig some of the distinct double blips. Some have said that a ring on edge can make a double blip ... maybe, but I feel I dig enough subtle double blips that come out of the sand as iron to think that very few rings sound off like that. Try it, form your own thoughts and share them! And it helps to add a magnet to the bottom of the scoop (if you don't already have one) so you don't re-dig any hairpins.
Enjoy!

I know what you mean on the double beeps, i had an infinium and i pulled out a 24" silver chain that kept double beeping and what had happened was about 4" was flat and the rest was down deeper so each time i crossed it it would double beep. I just dig everything and keep going until i find something good.

Getting excited to hit the beach again with a PI machine for those deep targets and i think the Sand Shark will deliver.

Well... as good as one might be, or as confident as one might be, I'd still dig em all too...just for piece of mind. tvr... I'll have to figure a way to mount a magnet to my aluminum scoop, (I like those round hi-power ones) that's a great idea and have always had one on my gold prospecting pick and now that you mention it, I'm scratching my head thinking why has that never crossed my mind for beach detecting !!! That kind of pisses me off that sometimes the obvious is overlooked. Thanks tvr

Bucket, Use Tie Raps with a round magnet that`s got a hole in it, I have a Sand Shark on the way the one with a 10.5 coil, Mickfin

I forgot you can get the magnets with the hole in the middle, that works for me. How did you come to the decision on the coil size?, I think soon I will be ordering soon and that was something I was thinking about as well, any benefits one way or another? I figure you can cover more ground with a bigger coil but it might be a little heavier.

The 10.5 coil is only about a 1/2 lb heavier making the whole unit about 5 lbs the coils are so thin that a lot of the weight is removed. I use a old camera strap and a small bungie cord to hook to all my detectors and it works well for prolong outings.

On the magnets get the round ones with a hole and drill a small hole in the scoop and use a small bolt to hold it tight, it works good and it grabs those pesky hair pins

I have a new Sand Shark with the 10.5" coil and love it. I've also had the 8" coil version before, but I prefer the 10.5" for the little bit of extra depth because the sensitivity of both on smaller items wasn't really noticably different by me. I have mine on a straight shaft and love the balance it gives.

Hay All, My Sand Shark will get her soon, Question can some of you hear DEEP coins with the S/H ??? Like a place wear you have found SILVER before???
Thanks 4R your INFO, mickfin Over N out,
