sand shark threshold?

How do I tell if I have my threshold set right should i here a steady hum should it be jumpy I've been using it about 4 months now and haven't quite figure this one out I think I got it but just want tone sure. Also what's the difference in the two modes is normal the best which should i use. And I also notice when i turn the volume up it sounds a little different can it be to loud and I miss the whispers.

I set my Sand Shark to a faint steady threshold sound. If the back ground noise in loud, such as high winds or surfsounds, I increase it some so I always hear it. You should always hear the back ground noise to be sure you are not missing weak deap targets. I occationally get a wavering backgound sound but I've attribute it to some type of electical interferance. I may be wrond about the cause but normally moving down the beach another 100 feet cures it.

I always hunt in VCO mode. It provides more information and is easier to pinpoint with. Information wise, I can avoid digging probably half of the bobby pins. The other half I do dig even though I'm sure they are hair pins but just want to be sure. Iron will almost be a wider signal. I still dig most of it because you don't know if there is a coin or a ring under the iron.

I too hunt in VCO mode nearly all of the time. The normal mode seems to slightly lengthen to threshold rise over targets, but the variation in pitch tied in with the threshold rise catches my attention a little better. I run with volume maxed and adjust threshold for just audible. Like Bleaver says, interference can make the threshold waver, sometimes a lot. Moving away from the interfering source makes an immediate improvement.
