Sand screw to recover targets?

Bence

New member
Has anyone used a sand screw to recover targets? If so, how versatile is it and how well does it work? It looks really interesting, I'm just reading "Advanced Water Working Techniques" by Andy Sabisch and he makes a brief mention of it?

Sand Screws work in soft sand, and are good for deep water ....Made one long ago, just like the one pictured. Have not seen any out there since the early 90's

Thanks for the pic, they look cool and look like they can really work - in soft sand. Most of my beaches are soft sand with a few bits of gravel here and there.

Sand screws are good for where the sand is Wet & Quick. When the walls of the hole collapse. In the soft quick sand a scoop can not get in and out fast enough to recover the target, the sand fills the holes before you can recover to hit it again, the target sinks out of reach. With the sand screw You mark your spot, screw in about a foot, shake it but not pulling it out, screw in more until you feel you have got your target. Squeeze the leaver for the trap door, then pull it out and shaking it at the same time. Most of the time you lucky. Simply put, you are forcing the sand thur the screw out the 1/2 inch holes catching everything that will not go thur the holes. Each beach & type of hunting requires different scoops, The Reilly's Long Nose SS scoop I have now Hits about 14 inch on the first scoop, if I'm am Lucky I can get another in before the walls go, but I still lose a few!
