Sand Scoop

Got my RGT 7" scoop yesterday. Just curious has anyone ever tried adding some of that insulation foam down the tube to make it float a little? Nasty stuff.... but surely some one has tried it. Ive been told to use a divers belt and attach a D ring, rope, and brass ring to the scoop when in the water. Overkill?

Being attached to your scoop is a good way to keep from losing it. If you go out in the rough stuff it is better to be safe than sorry. I have been knocked around, but I can honestly say I have never come close to losing a scoop. But I guess there is always the first time. One thing I will recommend is to leave enough slack in the coil wire for the coil to be bent all the way back. You don't want to pull too hard on the cable. I have tripped already and my weight bent the coil back. No harm if there is slack for it to happen. Always carry a spare coil bolt too. No need to ruin a hunt over a $3.00 part. Sort of got off topic here, but in the surf you just have to be prepared or you will be dishing out some $$$ down the road.

About 10 inchs of a foam noodle will hold your handle up. Also spray the back of your scoop with Plasti-Dip (comes in a spray can) and this will keep your feet from slipping while in the water. I use 3 coats myself and it really makes a difference. Home Depot has it in a spray can. RTG is a fine scoop now catch some GOLD in it. HH :minelab:

Funny you mentioned the plastic dip. I was looking at it today..... didnt think about it for that. I was thinking about a light coat of something to keep the black from the aluminum off me. I knew about the noodle... but thought if i used spray inside the tube it wood work as well and cut down on the ugly lol. Man Goodmore i was just getting used to your avatar.

I have RTG 7" SS scoop. I got the foam on it. I will post a picture tomorrow. I also took apart a scooter and used a piece to add to the grab bar. Made it go from 6' to about 20...give or take a few.

Its the scoop I am using in my avatar. One thing I have been meaning to get to was redoing the foam and the top handle. I wanna trim the foam down a bit and reglue the top. I just ordered an aluminum scoop and will have that to play with soon. I cannot wait for the weight difference. Soon...soon. 50% lighter. Anyway...the amount of foam I have now makes it hard to control once I bring the machine to the surface. Its not that bad...just a minor inconvenience.

Anyway...for you fellow northerners...enjoy the summer while it lasts...winters right around corner :( .

***EDIT Just found normal size pic of avatar...You can get a better look at scoop.

try the arrmorflex foam the stuff on your freon a/c lines .When taped it fits snug doesnt slip and yo can grab or use your knee or hip ion the scoop.Just my experiance.Good luck. They migh even sell it in home depot a/c section.

Don't use the Spray foam inside the handle.... I've tried it and it doesn't work.. and it was a real chore to keep it under control at first too..

after spraying. I tried to seal it up with duct tape until it dried. then I was going to put the handle grip back on.... ohhh what a mess that was...

Ps... another No-no... Whatever ya do. Don't tether your scoop to yourself at all.... very dangerous... even on a dive belt..

I've never had my scoop rippped from my hands as of yet.. and I've fought some pretty mean and nasty waves, Not because I wanted to either..

Good Luck & HH

Thanks MT... good info. on the foam. Guess ill deal with it a while and see what i need to modify if anything. I dont want to look like the guy selling pots and pans with everything .... id like to go simple yet get the box to the xcal off the handle. By the way... my 7" is aluminum but still weighs in at a bit over 4 lbs. I thought about the AC foam.... just not certain how foam and tape holds up in salt water. Lots of good info thou thanks.

excellent! a/c foam is closed cell doesn't hold water .slide it over the end then down the handle tape it tight .remove handle fill end with silicone caolk slide handle back on then shoot some more in little hole in hand grip.keeps water and sand out .good luck Wayne

Is there a reason i need to use the silicone down the handle? Does water go in and fill the tube and stay there? If so ... i got my answer.

If you don't have one already.... I'd pick up one the those "Swingy Thingy" kellyco brand harness'.. They are Fantastic.. I don't hunt without one.

it's the Chest Harness Type. that wraps around

Measure the ID of a foam "floaty" availible for kids as a swim toy. One may just slide down over the scoop handle.

They are pretty long lasting and come in bright colors too.

One floaty in 10" pieces would provide you with years of protection.

I used foam plastic pipe insulation which I have plenty of as a plumber.

It is split down one side, easily slipped onto the handle and 10" taped on with plastic electrical tape floats my scoop handle just fine.

GL&HH Friend,

MT ive been swinging a ML SE since they came out and hunt a lot of hours i dont expect the XCal to give me much trouble especially on the beach. Most beach hunting i still use the SE pretty successfully. I did some plumbing myself CJ im sure i have some stashed away for the job.
