Thats a great choice. But, you need to contact RTG and tell them you want the optional grab handle , and stainless steel lip put on it. It'll only cost you another $20.00 or so. You'll be very glad you did , the very first time you use it ! You can even tell them exactly where you want the grab handle placed. Very good product. I bought a Diamond head scoop , to try ( because my RTG doesn't have the steel lip. ) And , I still like my RTG better.

You can take a few minuets , and let them know exactly what you want , and get the perfect scoop the first time. Or , you can end up like everyone else , buying several different ones , looking for the best design. Just my two cents.

I have 3 RTG's and 1 Sun-Spot and use them all for different applications. One of the 6 inch scoops is a travel scoop and the 5 inch I use in fresh water and volley ball courts. My Sun-Spot I use mostly in fresh water swim areas with rocks and red clay bottoms. But all of them work very well in the sand. Get the biggest and best scoop you can afford if you are going to hunt mostly beachs. You won't lose any small stuff with the Sun-Spot. Good luck with your decision. HH :minelab:

no such thing as one perfect scoop! i own a rtg6 with the screen bottom, i did not get the stainless steel tip which i should have!!!!! i also own a stainless steel scoop with the small holes that will catch ear ring studs( and lots of shells if present.)
you will end up getting more than one so dont sweat it to much, wider, deeper, bigger is better if you are in the water.

I have three RTG scoops myself.

For the water you need something wide at least 6". I put my own screen in the bottom to catch the small stuff or it is gone. A grab handle and stainless lip make things easier.

For wet and dry sand you need a scoop with a supported wire mesh. 5" in diameter. The wire mesh needs to be supported so it doesn't collapse. Wire mesh disposes of the sand so much quicker when shaking. I also put a finer screen in this one to catch the small stuff. Saves a bunch of time. A 6 inch bucket in the sand is over kill and too much weight. A grab handle really low to hold while shaking would be a blessing. I'm talking 6" above the basket.

Aluminum turns your hands and clothing black. Wet sand will cling to you scoop and and hands. If you go up in the dry sand again and start shaking the sand out your hands can become sore from the abrasive sand. That is why a low grab handle would be great. Stainless is too heavy. A stainless tip is great because the aluminum will become dull and start to roll up.

Big stainless scoops are for the water. In the mid Atlantic States we are talking 5 months out of the year. The rest of the year we hunt wet and dry sand. In fact unless you are hunting low tide in Jersey you are not going to detect in the water.

Everyone should have a water and a sand scoop. Or hunting will be cut short because of fatigue.

Oh my third scoop I loan out to people I hunt with. A 5 inch diameter aluminum. It doesn't have the stainless tip. I wish it did. I might have a buddy try to put one on for me. This scoop is probably the scoop to use if you were to use only one. A little too small for the water, but can be done. And can be shaken in the dry.

I'm a scoop junkie, Got a couple RTG 6's, Bill Babba's Eltora, Diablo's, RTG's Alum 5 inch,, orig. Diablo, Custom Alum and a Miller. All are excellent choices..my thing now is to go light weight and as big as possible, getting to old for the 7 pound SS's scoops. So come next spring I'll be thinning out the herd.

Valuable info there Goodmore and makes a lot of sense. I adapt the one i have to meet the problems i encounter.
