Sanborn Maps

Did they change the passwords that get you into the site? Residence and Welcome have always worked but I can't seem to get in now.

I think the secret would be to find a new username and password. Anybody have any clues? I didn't use them a whole lot but they were fun to browse. I would think someone could give up a user name and password. It seems Ike the old ones were for some university to access. If anyone discovers a new one let us all know.

If you dont want to pay and you live in a large city, most of the metro libraries have them for free and you can make copies. Also many college libraries have them available also

Yeah, they nixed the "residence" and "welcome" trick awhile back. There are some libraries that allow you to access them via your library card. Your name acts as the "name", and the library card # acts as the password or whatever. Find out what libraries in your state have this system, and merely get a library card there. Library cards are free, aren't they? The particular name and password I'm currently using, are borrowed from someone I knew in that nearby city :) So if you know a person who has a library card in that town, they can simply lend you their #.

Here in Florida the state archives are online and include Sanborn maps that are available for free. I did this after I found that the Sanborn site is no longer free. You might check to see if a similar system exists where you live.

I just checked today, and I can still get on the site
A Forbiden page comes up now
I click on and of it 3 times, and the page comes up
Been working for me, try it

Do I click the back button and re-enter the password and try again 3X or what? Can't seem to get anything to work. Thanks

The Sanborn Fire Insurance Company created maps to assist their agents in determining the extent of property damage. They were hand drawn and showed the detail of a given city or towns development at the time of the particular maps creation. They started in the late 19th or early 20th century and were made up until about the mid twentieth century. Since development of a community is always ongoing and changing it was only feasable to make them for any particular city every five years. You can see how this would show the historical development of a place you were interested in hunting by seeing what buildings and other features were in existence at a given time. Just google in "Sanborn Maps" for more complete info. By using them along with GIS Aerial maps and property records you can do a great job of researching an area's history including the history of any given piece of property such as how old it is and who owns it now among other things. I have found them to be very helpful and interesting.

Not of much use for metro areas. Everything is built and paved over many times, again and again. For rural areas - maybe. For NY - furgedaboudit.

Does Sanborn have an official address?? We always went to the historical society to find them didnt know they were on the i net?
Thanks
