I have used the Sampson and loved it. Will have another one day. Never used the raven but I can say that the pointed tip shovel will penetrate ground easier than the rounded point shovel will.
I have a 30" Sampson w/serrated edge. Aside from being a great tool for cutting plugs, it is more inconspicuous than the Raven. And less cumbersome to carry around. Personally I think the Raven is a bit overkill for the purpose it serves.
As with any digging tool, using it on ea. hunt will dull the edge. I personally sharpen ea. of my digging tools with a file before venturing out to do some detecting. Yes, the Sampson will go thru the ground alot easier. Just my 2 cents.
I just received a new Sampson. I immediately noticed that something was not right. It's a lot smaller than what I remember my old one to be. After a little research, I found out that the shovel that I had before wasn't a "Sampson". It was a "Mauler"
The Mauler has a longer blade which I like a lot more. The Sampson seems dinkey in comparison. Now, since I've already used this one, I have to buy another shovel. Bummer.......
My Sampson works great and I love it's size, I would not want much bigger. The bigger they are more surface area has to penetrate the ground. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT5v7b0JzLA
I can see where it will work nice for cutting a small plug in dirt but I'm dealing with sandy soil here in Florida. Something a little longer and wider is better for me. The Sampson is nice though and will remain part of my collection of digger's.
