Same place more silver

I went back to the same site I hunted Sunday for a few hours. I took my XLT out to start with and went over the same area I worked with the V3i. My first target was a 1943 war nickel at 4 inches. It was a few feet from where I was digging wheaties the other day. I only used the XLT to see how well or not I was doing with the new machine. I don't think it proved anything because I don't care what you use if the coil doesn't pass over the target you won't hear it. I got the V3i back out and concentrated on the most productive area that is around a brick out door BBQ that is all that is still on the property. Well I came up with 3 more wheat cents and another Merc dime, 1916 is my oldest Merc yet. I think this site is a good place for me to test out some of the advanced settings when I get another chance. Oh, I almost forgot, my new pinpointer came from New England Metal Detectors yesterday, Thanks Andrew!! Thanks for looking, Jim

Thanks Mick, I also bought a Whites Dual Field PI last fall. It is deep for sure and another learning curve. I think I have everything I need now and the nice thing is, I have been lucky enough to pay for everyone of them with gold and silver I have found over the last 3 years. It's the hobby that keeps on giving!! Good luck with your PI, JIm

You are right about, it doesn't prove anything. There is one site I have hunted hard with Larry and each time we have gone back We have gotten more old coins. You would swear we hit every last inch, NOT.

You are doing good Jim, but you never get it all. I have hunted an old college for almost 20 years and I still occasionally pull out an oldie now and then that I have hunted over hundreds of times. This story is common on all of the forums, that Brand X didn't find this but my brand did so it is the best.......

In watching the videos, you might notice how much ground is being missed because people can't bring themselves to hunt slow enough to overlap their swings. I know I'm guilty ...............:surrender:

That brings me to a question. I hear constantly how areas are hit hard by detectors. And yet they still produce old coins. Is this because the coins shift from say being on edge, to a more detectable angle? Or newer tech. Or do hundreds of people pass over that particular spot? I am sort of new to detecting and it amazes me that a park that in my area that has been hunted since metal detectors were sold to consumers, still produce wheat's, silver and IH's.

The reasons are many David and newer, better machines is just one of them. I also think coins do move a little as well and it is almost impossible to cover 100% of the ground even by hundreds of detectorists, especially targets at depth. Moisture, masking and who knows how many more factors affects why we seem to never find all of the targets in the ground no matter how well it has been hunted.

I have been hunting for about 5 years now and the phrase " a place is never hunted out" is what I have read on many forums. I guess it is a combination of things like new hi tech machines but the fact of the matter is if the coil doesn't pass over the dime you won't find it. If you look at a soccer field and think of it in one inch blocks, thats a lot of blocks to pass the coil over. I know when I walk out on a beach and think that way it is overwhelming. But sooner or later the old stuff has to play out or become more rare. Good luck, Jim

I have this park across the street that I've hunted to death with all kinds of equipment and still finding the occasional oldie. (Another local guy pulled out a Seated Quarter in an area I thought was completely modern fill....I need to give that area a little more respect!) Just goes to show, there is always something!

I love fill dirt, you seldom know where it came from..........
