Saltwater Beach Test of the Minelab X50 & Fisher Edge, the Freshwater Test will follow.

I was given the opportunity to test two recent new mid-priced detectors by Fisher and Minelab. Both manufacturers provided the units to me for my evaluation and neither asked for anything more than a fair and balanced report. I had previously tested the Fisher Excel and Minelab X-Terra 30 against one another in a detailed and lengthy review. Some have referred to this previous review as a

that's a work of art! I too had both detectors for awhile and tested them against each other. I also noticed what you mention on the audio response differences. In fact, because of that, as well as the relatively diminished iron resolution and lack of "true" all metal on the X-T, and the difference of the pinpointing systems, it (the X-T) no longer lives here.

A big thanks for all the effort put into the comparison test Bill. I know you endured some long cold hours on the beaches to give us that great report.

Dang those Corona and Mikes Hard Lemonade caps, the bane of waders everywhere.

Especially braving the cold as a winter "project". I tried a beach the other day & didn't last long with the wind whipping off the water :surrender:

& to think this was a beach test. I bet they'd really get upset if someone did an honest comparison in heavy iron trash.....

Bill's test also shows what some of us know already when it comes to the Excel. It really is a remarkably capable detector relative to price/depth (ie very close to the depth capability of more expensive models) and also arguably even perhaps better if used in extreme trash, etc. I think of the Excel as the 1236 of Fisher's TID line. I know by experience that there are times where the 1236 is the better choice to use over the 1270. AND vice versa of course also.

a couple weeks after getting the Excel I developed the "Excel Swagger". :) Thick iron, no problem cause I'm packin'! You know your psyche has been altered when you look forward to working nail patches.

are the kinds of tests I have always hoped to see done by others on new machines. They are very time intensive, and so I can understand the reluctance by others to undertake them.
