Salt Token

Thought this was a neat find. Hard to imagine that the symbol on the back was for luck.

The word swastika is derived from the sanskrit, meaning any lucky or auspicious object, and in particular a mark
made on a person or thigs to denote good luck.

BTW, I now suspect this was more of a 1930s item than I did when I made that smallish old picture for another site. Some think these lucky tokens were associated with the Chicago World's Fair in 1933, and I can buy that, but it seems oddly coincidental that 1933 was also the year Hitler came to power in Germany, and therefore rather strange that they would use the swastika emblem. But, as mentioned, it was an ancient symbol of good luck before the Nazis made it a symbol of hatred. Note that mine has the big swastika on the obverse going counterclockwise, unlike the clockwise Nazi swastika. The smaller one on the reverse of my token has it going clockwise, though, as it does on your piece.

PS- mine really did bring me luck, as it happens- I found a lot of other old coins and goodies on that site- it was a regular hotspot!

Keep that one you found always- hopefully it'll work for you!

The symbol is backwards from the swastika the German used. The Germans copied it, but reversed it for their use.
I was told this symbol is in fact a good luck symbol and was a design of the Navaho's Indians. I have found several plus one on a ring, here is a picture of it, but sure wouldnt want to wear it as i am sure I would get some dirty looks.[attachment 79564 ring1.jpg]

It was good luck. I think the swastika has the cross facing the other way. They are not the same symbol. I found a token with one too, that was from a Jewish man's store. I couldn't believe how cruel that was until someone told me that it just looks like a swastika, but it isn't the same.

Thank You Terrie..I had not heard that before..... Appreciate your answer.

Guess they got even.....

i found an odd token just like this many years ago for a shoe store. the reverse [swastika] side was exactly the same except for the lettering... said something about shoe store stuff. the obverse side had the pic of a funky looking boot, a merchant token. i gave it to the guy whos yard i was hunting. still had gold plate on it too. hh,

That is a nice indian ring!

Just couldn't use it, myself...
Just can't risk offending anyone when doing service work for people.
