Salt Shaker

Well-known member
I have been working a string of houses that have been around for almost 100 years. Today I hit my first find. The old X-70 gave me a solid 40 and wouldn't budge. Dug down about 6"-7" and spotted the top of the shaker. My first thought was that I had found just the top. I went to pull on it and it wouldn't budge. It is about 4" tall. I tried to unscrew the top but no go. Anyway, I don't know what it is made of. It shows some bright silvery spots and is really heavy. I would guess it weighs around 8-10 ozs. Found it about 10' from the tree with the barrel underneath it.

look at all that space to detect in!!!!! Probably hard ground but there is space!!!! interesting salt shaker

Nice find there Kid:clapping: Is there any writing on the bottom of that?
Where did they get their water? Is there a well? Looks like you have lots of area to cover as was stated.
Dig it up before it gets to hot.

Have you been able to get the lid off the shaker yet. Be intereste in what might ne inside. 10 oz. seems pretty heavy for just the shaker but it might be a bi-metal with silver plating on it. Just wondering if something was hidden inside.....like some gold ??

Yes, there is a well but, I don't think I will be doing anything with it. Unfortunately the landowner told me that I was the only one to be out there, no exceptions. It appears that on the bottom of the shaker it says. .401 nothing else anywhere. Yes, I have a lot of ground to cover. I have premission to hunt 5 other homesites that look just the the one I posted.

.

Soaking it in plain water, then I try the top again.

A lot of the old Shakers are only covered in a thin sterling silver and the inside are filled with some sort of plaster to give the the wt.
