Salem's Custom House....

[attachment 76279 Winter024.jpg]The Customs House is where the U.S. Government collected a percentage of anything a vessel brought in as cargo. Most everthing brought to Salem, was from the East Indies. Silk, for one. This building was built in 1819. It is the location where Nathanial Hawthorne worked out of as a surveyor for the gov't, but you would remember the name better, as being the author of "The Scarlet Letter". Never read it myself, but heard of it. May have seen the old movie, but don't remember it. His office, where he wrote, and worked was the room on the first floor,to the left. That National Park Service works out of the building now. They restored the Eagle a couple of years ago.[attachment 76280 Winter030.jpg][attachment 76281 Winter029.jpg]

and boats...all with lots of interesting history. You folks seem to take more interest in the old buildings and spend the time and money to restore them whereas Texas really does not put much effort if preserving much of anything. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)
