safari question

cwdigger

New member
I am thinking of buying a safari but all I do is civil war hunt I have a DFX 300 right now and it does ok but not as good as my tesoro as far as relic hunting goes. Anyone have any input on the safari's ability to find cw relics, bullets, buttons, frags etc...... An all metal mode basically I dont want to hear a "chatter" in relic as the dfx and have to guess what I am digging. Any help would be appreicated

I hunt cw relics myself and just starting to learn the Safari. If you have never used a FBS machine there is a learning curve as far as undertanding the signals (there is for me anyway). I took the safari to my little bullet hill in Resaca and was able to dig 11 more 3 ringers and a piece of shrapnel in a couple of hrs. while learning the machine. One of the bullets was 12+ inches deep and the others were 6-8 inches. I've only had the machine 3 weeks so I have a lot to learn.

can any one tell me if the safari is easy to use as im new to detecting and just bought one coming tuesday

Holmes,
And anyone else getting into Safari,
Get Andy Sabich's book, Mastering the Quattro. You will never ever regret getting it. I have a Quattro. Read the book four times or more my first summer (last summer), and learned more every time I read it.
Turn down the sensitivity and sweep slowly and you will learn it.
Good Luck,
Mark

I am brand new to metal detecting and purchased the Safari detector by Minelab. I admittedly am frustrated with the detector for a few reasons, which I'll go into in a moment. But first I was hoping that someone might know what the icon that looks like a pepper shaker is. I have looked in the manual and there is no reference to this icon. So if anyone knows what this means, I would love to know also.

Secondly I am finding that the detector gives me various responses for the same object, jumping around from one metal type to another. Is this normal? I spoke with the dealer and they told me it was probably because the sensitivity is too high. The default sensitivity setting is "auto" which is supposed to self adjust to the soil conditions. So I'm wondering why I should need to adjust it manually to correct this problem. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would love to hear from you. Like I said, I am brand new to this hobby, but I am quickly losing my interest because I feel I can't believe a thing the detector says. And yes I am preforming the noise canceling function before starting my detecting session.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The Quattro has 7 icons, the screw cap could be taken for a pepper shaker I guess, try a screw cap under the Safari coil and see if it is the same icon that has you wondering. Auto sensitivity can still be too much sensitivity, try what the dealer suggested, maybe a setting of 12 or lower and see if the detector is more stable. Also there will be a lot of info in past postings that will be worth the time to read through seeing as how you are new to detectors.
Regards
John
