Safari and the Racer 2

Kapok

Active member
I have been using a Racer 2 since last fall, and while I am impressed with its speed and unmasking capabilities, I'm not sure that it gives me the competitive edge I need in overhunted grounds. So I've been doing a lot of reading on the etrac/safari/explorer format and am seriously considering it. Probably leaning toward the Safari because I value simplicity plus power, and my budget isn't that high. I used an X-Terra 70 for a while and thought it was a solid machine but nothing special.

All that to ask for any advice or input here. Thanks!

I see my post got moved here from the Safari forum. ☹️. Is this where they send threads to die?

Not necessarily.
But I'd complain to Guv about it being moved-seems like a Safari specific question..
Or go back, and just raise questions about the Safari.
(you can probably get a good used Etrac for the price of a new Safari at Finds Classifieds)

Kapok, it's hard to beat a FBS detector for deep coin hunting. Not only very deep, but very accurate at depth. My last detector was a Racer 2 and it reminded me of a Fisher F75 performance wise. I am now swinging a Safari and am very glad and confident to have this simple detector. I think the Safari is as potent as any FBS detector made and many people like the upfront, simple interface. As long as you use a slow sweep speed, it will pick up coins with iron in the same hole. As a coin hunter, I have always had problems with single frequency detectors like the Racer, F75, and T2 handling pull tabs, square tabs, and small aluminum slaw. I dug way too many perfect sounding high tones that most of the time were this type of junk. FBS detectors handle modern park trash better than any detector I have tried.

I'll second this and mirrors my experience using single frequency detectors vs (for me) BBS. Any of the Minelab FBS / BBS detectors will (At least it did in my case to a place that has been hunted the last 45 years+ or - ) re-open your hunting grounds to more non-ferrous goodies. The machines are heavier in weight (compared to the R2) and need to be swept slow. (Think turtle slow) but I feel you will be impressed with the results once you learn the Safari (if this is indeed the machine you purchase).

Pesonally would go for a used Explorer model myself...Safari is just not an explorer...for all around hunting Racer 2 but for real deep silver tough to beat an Explorer series..

Thanks for your input here, Dan. The Racer 2 reminds me of the T2 I had previously--very capable machine, but I'd like to move up a step regarding target identification capabilities. With both the T2 and the R2 I dig an awful lot of deep beaver tails, square tabs and the like. I expect some of that as part of the game, but I think I can do better.

I have a Tesoro background, thus I value simplicity over complexity, so the Safari may be better for me than the Explorer or E-Trac.
