What is the verdict of using the S.E.F. Butterfly Coils on the MXT ?? A winner and better than the stock coils, or not ? Thank you.

Hi,

I have the 18x15 SEF Butterfly coil. I bought it to go deeper and cover more ground when searching for gold. I thought It would be less sensitive to small targets than it is. My search area is a large area that used to be a goldfield and has been underwater for 60 years. Bad droughts mean not much water and it's been uncovered for the last 15 years. Most of the easy gold was already detected before I was even aware of detecting.

I often find lead fishing sinkers which is a good sign and lets me know i'm on virgin ground. I have found 2 split shot sinkers weighing 0.2 grams each and a small shotgun pellet. This was a supprise with the SEF coil because I have never found lead this small with my 5.3 coil. I have hunted gold fields with minelab users who warned me about how mineralised the ground was and that my VLF machine probably wouldn't handle it. The SEF coil handled it really well for some reason. The 5.3 coil and the 10x6" were too noisy. There was only one small patch that was too mineralised for my SEF coil. I was finding just as much junk as the minelab users.

I am impressed with this SEF coil and it does out perform my other coils without question. I still haven't found any gold with a detector but it's only a matter of time.

Aussie MXT how is this coil for weight ?
Is it heavy and cumbersome or easy to swing ?

Thanks for that great assessment Dicko, I appreciate it !!

You may want to try Doc's Swingy Thingy bungee set up for the large coil.

Let's be careful posting links on Findmall. Doc's, White's and Kellyco are sponsors and are OK. Other links will probably get you in trouble with Admin.

The stock coil is a piece of cr@p. In the bad ground here it will not detect a known target at 8". With the whites eclipse 6x10DD it comes in loud and clear.

Gave it a last chance last week. Only dug 4 to 5 inch deep targets and all junk. So it will collect some dust in the clostet for the rest of it's beeing.

Happy Legal Hunting

I have to say that I love my stock coil. I've found many many great targets quite deep in different types of soil with it. Pinpointing is extremely accurate also. JMHO and HH, Nancy

Yo,
Been using 10 X12 SEF for 3 months, bought it to replace my ''Big Foot''. I hunt saltwater beaches in So CAL, I use prospecting mode most of the time, find targets in the 12'' range. Move from dry to wet sand with minor adjustments to
the gain. Gain on preset, salt mode, hyper sat, very quiet.

Hi Joel,

This coil is heavy although not as heavy as it looks. Absolutely killed my arm on the first day. I will be buying on of those bunjee thingys. I'm getting used to it now. Used it for 5 hours last sunday and ended up with only a slightly sore arm the next day. I didn't really notice the weight in the field untill I put it down. I'm still finding it hard to pinpoint sub gram targets with it and this takes up too much time. Now I carry the 5.3 with a lower shaft attached in my backpack and If I haven't located the target in about 30 seconds. I put the unit down plug in the 5.3 and use it by hand as a probe to get my target quickly. This method actually saved me heaps of time and I got a lot more ground covered. The gold at this patch is usually in the top inch or on the surface. Trying to find it amongst the gravel, leaf litter and sticks is a pain. I'm going to have to get a pinpoint probe soon.
