'S' curve handle

Mat in MA

Member
Most metal detectors these days come with an 'S' curve on the upper portion of the shaft to use as a hand grip. Has anyone ever tried to straighten out the shaft with a pipe bender so that they now have a shaft with no bend in it? I'd like to attempt it, but I'm not sure if it will weaken the upper portion or not.

Why not just do it the easy way and make a new handle? That way you will still have the original one to fall back to.

If you try to straiten an aluminum shaft it would crack. Buy another aluminum tube at the supply shop and modify that.

Thanks! I like both answers. Just one question. What supply shop would I be able to purchase what I need?

If you have a tractor supply store check them, or electrical supply has alumin pipe

My local True Value hardware store has 1" dia x 8ft aluminum thinwall for $20.
No 7/8".

Someone elsewhere mentioned possibly at boat/RV supply?
...7/8" is used for safety railings/handholds???

Good luck

That may have been me.

I purchased some tubing from a local boat store to make a straight shaft for my Surf PI Pro. The stuff is kinda thick walled, so bending it may be quite a task.

Here's the link to what I used, it has a nice finish to it...

Here's the thread on my straight shaft so that you can see what the tubing looks like...

Good luck!

Why not go to the hardware shop and buy some straight alluminium tubing ????
have a nice day

Yup.

Thanks, Hobbes...
Your rig looks great!

I'll give the local boat places a shot to fix my CZ.

I've also got a Garrett Sea Hunter I need to pole mount the control box on.
Hip mount is not a good thing for me.

Can't wait to get in some beach time!
