Met up with Park Pirate this morning determined to dig those last 2 oldies to hit the 1000 coin total from the old inner-city park. I figured I might as well keep trying for those deep nickel signals since we cleared all the high tones out of there ! After maybe a half hour I found number 999 when I dug a deep signal I hoped would be a Buffalo or V nickel. From about 8 inches I pulled out a crusty old nickel and could see the outline of the buffalo on the reverse. Dug another United Traction Company School bus token (4th one in last 4 outings) and then got another deep signal I hoped might be #1000. Well, it was a nickel but just a corroded old Jefferson. A while later a get another deep hit and down a good 8-9 inches, number 1000 lay in the bottom of the hole. I could see the Indian and knew I had another Buffalo nickel. 9 of the last 10 old coins I have dug there have been either Buffalo, V or Jefferson war nickels. I must half dug hundreds of beaver tails, pull tabs, pieces of can slaw, rusty crown caps and deep tin foil to get those nickels. Here is the breakdown for the 1000 coins: 69 Barber dimes, 8 Barber quarters, 2 Barber halfs, 1 Canadian silver dime (1870), 1 Shield nickel, 101 V-nickels, 177 Buffalo nickels, 31 Jefferson war nickels, 2 large cents, 1 flying eagle cent, 436 Indian head cents, 1 Seated liberty dime, 119 mercury dimes, 16 silver Roosevelt dimes, 8 silver Washington quarters, 5 Standing liberty quarters, 3 two cent pieces, 1807 Spanish half reale, 4 civil war tokens, 2 Canadian 5 cent silvers (fishscales), 6 Canadian large cents, 1 Canadian 1/2 penny, 1877 Dutch 2 1/2 cent piece, 2 British farthings, 1 British half penny and 1 Chinese cash coin. I had Park Pirate get a shot of me holding number 1000. I guess I'll start the countdown to 2000 tomorrow. I don't see that happening though ! I'm just about done with that park !!!
