S-12 vs. WOT vs. SEF

I'm looking to augment my beach arsenal with a larger coil. The praises have been mentioned many times on this and other forums regarding the above mentioned coils. My weapon of choice will be the Sov GT. I'll be using it solely on the beach in the areas from below the towel line, into the water and everywhere in between. The only time I'm in the dry is walking to and from the car and when I have to make a pit stop. I should also mention that I'm a sand scrubber in case any of them have a tendency to fasle when touching the sand. I know that all will go deeper, and have better coverage that my stock Tornado 10". Weight is not a concern, Swingy Thingy is a great invention.

So what does the gang have to say?

Best,

Pro,

I think all those coils will do a great job.

The SEF coils are well regarded as is the WOT coil.

I had the SEF 15x12 but sold it not because it was a bad coil but for 2 reasons.

1. The cable is too short to hipmount....needs another 12" of cable.
2. For some reason it wasn't at all stable as the WOT when using a third party power amplifier (Shaun's Amp)

For regular shaft mounting and regular Sovereign settings then the SEF coil performed just fine.

If you're expecting a large depth increase with these bigger coils over the stock coil then you will be disappointed.
Some people desperately believe that these bigger coils will get them another 30% depth over the stock coil...sorry but it just aint going to happen.:ranting:

My tests suggest about a 15% maximum depth increase on coin/ring sized targets....certainly no more than that.
Like you, I got the bigger coil purely for increased ground coverage at the beach.

If I could only have 1 coil then it would be the stock 10".

I can't comment on the S12....to me it doesn't offer enough ground coverage over the stock coil BUT it is a nice size for those who don't want to swing the bigger coils and want something bigger than the 10".

Bottom line.....can't really go wrong with any of these coils. Sounds like the SEF or WOT will do the job for you but bear in mind some of the (to me) negatives of the SEF coil.

Detectorists will defend their choice of coils to the death...:starwars:
Just as some detectors will perform better than others in certain locations, the same holds true for coils.

Maybe you could try both coils out prior to purchasing?

Hope this helps,
Tony.

iv used about all of them and like the S12 the best.its just as deep as the WOT and not near the weight...i beach hunt about 6 days a week and for me the S12 fits the bill better than the rest.its much easier to pinpoint than the WOT..i also use the Swingy Thingy .with it i can hunt with the big coils all day with little arm fatigue.if i had to choose one it would be the S12 1st WOT 2nd. they are both good coils and add ground coverage over the stock 10"

If you haven't yet read the other thread on here about larger coils. Covers many of your questions. My pick is the 15x12 SEF as being the "best" for depth and performance, but hunting style and ground conditions might make the WOT a better choice for some very tiny minuscule segment of people.

If you don't want anything heavier than your 10" then you are looking at the S-12, Excelerator 12.5", or SEF 12x10. The SEF coils are said to false less going in/out of the water than the WOT and run more stabile by some people. You'll for sure get more coverage with the 15x12 or WOT. The 12x10 will still offer better coverage than the 10" and so with the 12" coils but it's not going to be drastic.

If you want max depth and coverage it's either the WOT or the 15x12. The 15x12 can be made .6 ounces lighter than the stock 10" coil with it's cover still on by removing the 15x12 coil cover and spray painting the bottom with spray on bedliner to protect it. Details in the Beach forum.

Remember this...depth increase amount may be debatable with the 15x12 or WOT but you can bet you are probably getting deeper than anything out there ever has, maybe not as deep as some of the PI units but then they don't offer the discrimination of your GT. I like knowing that chances are when swinging over a "worked out" old land site I'm seeing deeper than probably anybody ever has with a detector there. Oldest coins will tend to be the deepest.

The 15x12 is going to offer best depth on coin/ring sized targets but consider the 18x15 if you want max coverage. From what I hear it's not as deep on those size targets than the 15x12 but if coverage is a concern it may find targets that smaller coils might miss.

I've got an Excalibur II with a 10 inch coil. On the beach it's depth is unbelievable. But on my Safari I get the most depth with my X-12. I had a SEF 10x12 and it must have been bad. I've got friends that use them but they do not out perform my X-12, if they did I would buy another. May be my machine or this TN ground. JMHO :minelab::tesoro:

Hello hershey1,

Yes, the stock 10" coil is very good....probably the pick of all the coils.
It stands to reason that a manufacturers coil should perform highly with it's own detectors.
I too had a SEF and wasn't happy with it (hey maybe I got a dud one as well as you)....so I got the Coiltek 15" WOT....much better for me personally. I believe Coiltek have made some minor changes with the current WOT from the original WOT to improve performance (type of wire used?).
Coiltek are a world leader in coil design and worked very closely with Minelab for many years....still do.
I have never tried the S12 but don't hear any problems from users.
I think the SEF coil range is made in Bulgaria ??

Happy hunting,
Tony.

I think from what I've read here and on other forums that I'm leaning towards the S-12. Just as deep as the WOT, lighter than the stock 10" and no problems with cable length (I'm a hip mounter) as mentioned with the SEF coils.

Thanks for the responses.

I would like to try an S-12 coil some day.

Can't go wrong with Sunray gear.

Tony.
