Rye Patch not hunted out yet!

I had meant to post this earlier, but my new camera messed up the pictures and I was hoping to get better ones from someone else.

At any rate, several of us went out about 3 weeks ago for 4 days. There were about 8 nuggets found most under 1 dwt. I got one right in the middle of the road that went 2.5 dwt but several guys went home empty handed.

HOWEVER... one of our more persistent (and oldest at 7:geek: who can out hunt most of us, got very lucky. He was hunting a trash filled wash digging up bits of can, bullets, and assorted mining debris. Just at the edge of the wash he got another huge signal that signaled another large piece of junk. But being hard nosed and stubborn, he dug it anyway. It was, in fact a large chunk of copper trash. And being the smart hunter he is, before covering his hole, he automatically ran his loop (a mono Joey, BTW) over the hole. Well, of course, there is still a target in the hole, deep and loud. And, of course, he knew it was another big piece of trash, right? And again, being persistent and stubborn, he knew he had to dig it out. At 15 inchs deep it finally moved out of the hole and into the dirt pile. Running the magnet through the dirt and coming up empty, he KNEW it was another piece of copper. Imagine the shock this old man got when he dug through the dirt and this fell into his hand!

MOVE THAT TRASH, GUYS!

That surely is a fantastic thing!
Never too old to dig up Gold!
Well done to him... always great to hear how they are found.

:surprised: That's a great nugget Digger. Just goes to show no matter how hard a place is hit, it's impossible to find it all! No matter what the size. Congrats

Actually, his age is 78. I don't know how that smiley got in there where the 8 was supposed to be.

I've got others guessing the weight on Robbs forum. It surprised me how much it was when we finally got it on the scale. Here's some hints... it's not too thick, 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick depending on where you look. It's solid, no quartz, not airy like some desert gold is, yet very pockety and rough. Unusual for Rye Patch too, no chevrons.

Any one want to take a guess?

Good guesses all. I was really surprised when we dropped it on the scale and the numbers kept climbing. Not having much experience in "hand weighing" anything over 5 dwt, I guessed about 1.5 oz.

Before cleaning, that sucker topped out at exactly 45 dwt, which is 2.5 oz! After cleaning, it lost 1 dwt to end up at 44 dwt. Still close enough to 2 1/2 oz for me.

That's the largest taken out of that area that I'm aware of in recent years and the largest our group has found since my 10 1/2 oz "Growler".

Wish I had some better pictures but there's always next year! Keep 'em coming guys, be persistent and stubborn. Dig that trash!
