Rusted Iron halo vs coin near rusted iron question

Most of the sites I have been hunting are littered with trash and a lot of rusted iron debris.
How do you guys tell the difference between a coin that is near a piece of rusted iron and the rusted iron halo the detector reads as it gets near a piece of rusted iron?
How do you know which one to dig and which one not to dig?
Thanks
Jerry

first of all you are always going to dig some falsys.. But if you go to pinpoint and you hear a large beep for the iron and can not get the extra beep of the coin then it is problably be only iron. Also many timesa pinpoint in disc and a pinpoint in pinpoint mode show a different location ten it is probably iron. Digging is the only true method.
Oh and also you can dig and then stick the X1 probe in disc mode and listen to see if the treashold nulls.. then don't proceed.. if you still get the coin signal then continue the search
Good Luck.
Jim

In this case, you dig a lot of rusty nails! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/wink.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=";)">
In most cases a coin with a nail, in at least one direction when you circle it, will repeat solid with an unmistakable coin sound and more than likely null the rest away around it. Once you get back around in a full 360, it should still repeat at the exact same point it did before. Then you should be able to get the pinpoint right over where it is repeating, but sometimes you can't get a pinpoint. A real rusty nail by iteself will sound good, but not repeat as solid from that one direction. Also the direction that sounds the best, will not sound the same when you get back around to it. (This is not always true, but it seems that way most of the time)If you have your limits and varibility maxed, then a false will be slightly higher pitched than silver. Being a musician helps you hear those. They won't always be higher, but most time they will. I still dig 3 or 4 nails and leave a bunch in the hole if the probe nulls, if I hunt all day. Most times I am pretty sure they are nails, but they are iffy enough that I dig just to be on the safe side.
Sometimes a silver dime with iron will lock solid on the screen to the left up against the black in iron mask -10, but they will repeat all the way around. They don't bounce at all. You have to trust your ears, not the meter.

I am having trouble setting my machine up. I've made up a test garden and burid a wheatie a mercury head about 6"deep and a silver quarter on it's edge I can pick the silver quarter up, no problem but the dime and the penny won't give a signal. Now I'm very new to this hobby but very determined to learn this machine,Iv'e found a handfull of wheaties in my buddys front yard about 2-3" deep but no silver maybe they were just poor!!What can i do to get the depth that I know this machine will do??

How fast are you swinging the coil? The Ex. has to have a real slooooow sweep to get deep. (It doesn't, but as a newbie you have to or you will miss them)When I mean slow I mean 1 foot per second tops!
What is your gain set on? Try bumping it up to 10 and see if that helps you.
What is your threshold level set at? If you still have it set to factory default it is at 10 which is too high. You want to move it down to just audible(7).
Do you have deep on?
What kind of screen are you using? If you are using factory coin screen, you will miss some coins, but still should be able to get the ones in your test garden. Try Iron Mask -10 and just get used to it. Once you do you can't beat it!
Make sure you scrub the ground with the coil, if you hold it off the ground even a little bit, you lose depth!
Also, newly buried coins have no halo, the Ex. will not pick them up as deep as one that has been buried for years. You should still be able to get yours though.
My guess would be that you are sweeping the coil too fast and you are not getting it down on the ground enough. Let us know if that helps any and we will go from there. Also, the best learning you can do is to hunt with someone that has experience with the Explorer. It will be well worth your drive!

Hey Thanx Ric,I'm sweeping the coil pretty slow I've heard thats the way you do it with the explorer,I set the sens. to 32, Threshold to just audible, gain 10 deep. Useing quick start smart.Although I'm not scubbing the ground I've been keeping the coil just above I'll start practice that.I live in the black hills of South dakota and theres NO ONE that detects around here one of the many resons for me starting in this hobby I thought it would be great detecting here, and probably is!!!If you know who I could detect with I'd be happy to drive to get a education,or if anyone would like to come to the black hills we could detect around here, also have some mining claims that I've found a couple of nuggets this year on you guys are welcome to come and stay at my place or I will come to you!!!Thanx Again Ric

I am a poor bassturd, I don't travel much past the Illinois area, but if you are up for a trip, you are more than welcome to come out here anytime you want. I have a bunch of places to hunt. I can't promise you seated coins, but I have the areas that we have found them in before. I am in Shelbyville Illinois if you want to put that in Mapquest.
