Rust removal

I am new to detecting. I went out for my first time last week. While lurking around, I found a small iron clip. I did not think much about it. I placed it in my pocket and went home. A couple of days ago, I was looking on the back of it and noticed a name on it. Upon further research the name was that of my wife's great-great grandfather. The iron has rusted. I would like to remove the rust without causing damage to name. How do I do this?

Do you have pic of the item so we can see how bad the rust is? It maybe one of those piece's you just have to leave alone due to it being so small.

I don't have a pic. I will try to get one. The letters are 1/8 inch tall.
