Rust inhibitor question

kODIAKCLUB

New member
I need to put something on the rifle I found last year. It is flaking really bad to the touch. I need to get this thing cleaned and preserved. Any suggestions?

WD-40 will do the trick in the interim. Getting it re-blued eventually is the best option if it is worth saving.

Kodiak, your initial description is rather vague. Where was the gun found {attic, garage . basement, field , buried etc}
Is the barrel pitted? What condition is the receiver or action? Are parts moveable or are they frozen. Is the stock wood
or plastic? Use a brass or steel wire brush and try to determine the mfg, serial and model. Most will have a date.What
is the condition of the bore? Do you plan to display this weapon or bring it back to life? More info=better opinion.Use
that wire brush. I will follow this post.

Well I found the thing buried about 12" down in dirt. It was an 1860's rolling block. There is no way on getting this thing back to life. Its pitted just a little. I cleaned it up the best I could. I just want to coat it. I have seen alot of other relics covered in a black paint and was told it was a rust inhibitor. I just want to display it, and bring it to shows. Not looking to get any $$ for it.
