Rubber boots for Sovereign

gear box

New member
I accidentally posted this question on the Explorer page earlier. Mr. Clynick suggests putting rubber boots on the toggle switches of the Sovereign. I think he was talking about the older Sov. Is it still necesary with the Gt or did Minelab correct the problem? Thank's Gary

Gary thats for any of the sovs. I got my boots from a dealer here, sunray makes em.

I make my own for all my detectors with silicon aquarium air tubing. cut to size, heat one end and squeeze.heat other end and insert pencil point to stretch around toggle lock-nut. works great.

It's not so much that there was a problem, rather the orientation of the control box allows for dirt, and sand, to get into the switch. The boots keep the switch clean. It's more of a problem when hip mounting as the face of the control box is usually pointing upward. Some silicone based switch covers were available at one time, and I'm sure with some research they can be found. I recommend them highly.

No matter how you mount the control box you are going to get dirt into the switches unless you have some protection for them. It takes very little dirt to waste them.
The very first thing you do when getting a Sov is to get switch boots for it.

Exactly, dust, grime and dirt get in the toggles and eventually wear away connections. companies do not put boots on their toggle switches because they wear out faster than the warrantee of their product. So be very carefull, because loosening the locknut could cause the switch mech to fall inside the control box, then you have to open it. and you may loose your warrantee or botch it up ....somehow.Just be carefull

Sunray used to have them. Don't know if they still do or not. Give them a call and see. There is a link to their website on the Main page of this Forum. They are extremely easy to install with a little care. All the switches and controls on a Sov are mounted to a PC board so taking the nut off will not cause the switch to fall inside. All you need to do is unscrew the nut and screw on the rubber boot. Just make it snug not tight as trying to make ti overly tight will tend to twist the switch a little so that they don't line up exactly centered. When you are actually putting them on it will all make sense. It's a very easy thing to do. Hopefully Sunray is still carrying them.

Sun Ray has them plus any of the Sun Ray dealers should have some in stock, I keep 8-10 in stock for the Sun Ray probes which are the same as the Sovereign uses. Some like Radio Shack has are different treads on the nut.
