RTG scoop modifications

I got a stainless 7 inch hercules scoop. I am already thinking of a few things. It fills with water..can be aggrivating . It is heavy. I can get past that.

It sinks and grabber is to low.

I was thinking of using spray foam inside arm of it from top and hope it would float at least the handle. Was also thinking of taking rubber orange thing off and adding some more length with a wooden stick.

Anyone else have one of these they have tinkered with?

The faster and easier you can dig the better obviously. Some problems I have in that department is the amount of leverage I can exact on it in neck deep water. Also...once I get scoop in...retrieving it without spilling some contents seems to be a slight problem. I use my leg to raise it. Then grab bar. Between bumping my detector a few times and losing my balance I gettin a little bit annoyed. Don't get me wrong...scoop is great...just needs some adjusting.

I don't think you're gonna find one scoop that's applicable to all situations of use. If you're wading water up to your neck...... you may want to go to a diver detector! Then you could use a hand-held scoop!

Joeb, the spray foam does'nt help with the bouyancy, I tried that on mine. It does stop it from filling with water though. As far as gaining leverage, I got a thick guage aluminum handle and heated it and bent to the angle I needed. Works 100% better.

I've got the same problem you do, I've got the 6 1/2" scoop and have thought about cutting the stainless handle and adding a wooden handle but don't know if that's a good idea, paid too much for the scoop too mess it up. HH

I had a Hercules SS and i had a friend who is a machinist add a slight S bend to the handle. It makes it easier to pickup (BC you have the handle under your shoulder) and it also aids in placement of the scoop in the water. Frankly I think a good grab handle alone will do wonders for you.

works great for me.
