Great points. However, in the "real world"there is tons of trash in some locations that make life miserable. With the Royal I can leave the disc level knob at minimum, rotate the notch level knob to a preset point while I'm in standard disc setting, and have 3 tones (low for nickels, MIXED for tabs, and high for coins) and though probably not the low acceptance range of the Golden umax, still low enough to get the small gold rings. If I peradventure into a tot lot,(most here in East Texas are well manicured w/no pea gravel, etc) I can flip it into the pinpoint and, as long as I keep the motion steady and slow (it retunes) I can duplicate the Compadre all metal search. And, finally, in the "hell holes" (tab city) the notch lets me get some coins that others stay away from-and the lower end acceptance is STILL low enough to get some of the small gold rings. Having the Silver umax as a backup is also a plus. I spent a few days in it's all metal mode and can tell you that LOCATION is everything to anyone that wants to go the beep-dig route-unless you need nails to build with! Now in it's MINIMUM disc setting- I was finding coins masked by iron and nickels that had been there and were glazed over that didn't give the usual loud response and I'm sure that's why no one else found them. THAT umax is GREAT for coins. And I have used tone comparison by switching from all metal to low disc and love that feature.
I guess my point was that I was able to get a taste of several phases of searching to see which one fit my modus operandi- and had two great weapons-my Royal and my Silver umax. Now, if I had the patience of tabdog(I mean it takes a lot just to try to play the quitar!) and had the time to sort through all the trash(a possibility if I make it a year or two more) that would be great. Finally, I have decided to sell my CZ-5(hardly used, w/3 coils and lower rods) and THEN will make some decisions-but for now, in my mind, I'm blessed-especially since I got that Royal for just $75 from a guy that outgrew it!
