Route 66

I'm posting this "just in case". I've heard there are a few hams out there, so..... Be advised; starting 000 zulu Sept 13, the annual "Route 66 on the air" will be up again for those interested. This thing is the most fun I have all year. Use google with "route 66 on the air" for info.....see you in the pile up, 73, Ron K6ZL:clapping::clapping::clapping:

Thanks for the heads-up.

Yes I remember the show, the ham thing though is based on the song; "Get your kicks on route 66" Most of the cities mentioned in the song will be "radio-active" for a one week period. The sponsoring group issues a commemorative certificate for working (talking to) any single city and an honorable mention for each city additionally worked. It's been hard to do in the past when solar conditions were favorable, but now with this extended sun spot minimum (forget global warming if this keeps up, we may look forward to global cooling instead) has got radio communication really stifled.
In the past I've usually worked all 18 stations, with a lot of work, but last year I only got 2..., because of these conditions.
I love metal detecting, but it and other hobbies always take a back seat to ham radio. As we say , Seventy Three....(Best Regards )

Well...........! Propagation has improved alot since last year. Last year I only got 2 Route 66 stations during the whole operation. Today, 0000 Zulu starts here at 5:pm for me, I've nailed 6 already, wow!
O'course I do attribute my "Skelton Cone" antenna for 40 & 75 and new 35' tower with Mosley TA33 installed on top, and, I have 3 amps in series, one each pretuned on 75, 40 & 20, that use Thoridated Tungsten fils (instant on) makes a difference when rapidly changing bands. I heard one dude say he had half of the 19 already. Anyway it was very good "fishing" today.......

Good work Ron K6ZL..... de K8GTB 73 ar....Z

Was I W6B? No I did operate W6YDK, W4PFC, KG4AM back in the early 60's. Was a radio operator in the Marines from 60-64. Ran the ham stations for phone patches and messages from the guys overseas to families in the states. This was before MARS really took off. Now that is all they use I guess.
Tnx and 73 cul.....Z

Hey Cool, Zeekeys. Just found W6B copyable on 40 meters......now it's a full sweep! If I was a submarine, I could fly a broom from my mast! BUT now that it's over, it's over til next year  So what'll I do now? Hey, I'll drag out my :bounty: and go metal detecting :detecting:
yeah! 73, Ron K6ZL.

Good hamming Ron. Is this contest on CW? I use to work 40 mtr CW when I was a kid at home. Haven't been on for many years. Ran the globe scout 680A and S 40B rcvr had a knight kit vfo. These words are so unfamiliar to me now. Used the kws-1 and 75 a 4 and later used the collins s line in the service. Had a 6 element tri band beam that would punch a signal to the far east when conditions were right. Sometimes had to stay up all night or get up 1am to get to the station when the skip was right. Got out of a lot of duty because I was hamming.
When I got out of service I worked for Amateur Electronics for a while. Thanks for the memories Ron........Z

Hey Zeekeys, Cool on the Globe and Hallicrafters! Fun stuff! Still got your call? Years ago I was a CW freak. Thats all I lived for. I used to hang out on 7027 kcs chatting with ships operators over in the Indian Ocean. My rig was a 190kc-550kc Arc-5 receiver with a 40meter converter and a Navy TDB-2 transmitter with a pair of 813's in the final. It chirped like hell but they always came back! These days us older hams use cw alot, but the fcc dropped cw from licenes requirements. New operators don't even know cw. Only 3 licenes class now Tech Gen and Extra. You ought to reup! Still fun as a barrel of monkeys, like metal detecting. 73, Ron.

Yes I still have my amateur ticket(General bumped up from conditional). I was a bigger freak on CW than you were. I did nothing but CW. I got a certificate while in service from W1AW at 35 wpm and could copy at 45 wpm. I went through a 16 week school in hours. I could copy 26 wpm solid with pencil. Couldn't go any faster because the CW training machine couldn't go any faster. All we had to copy was 16 wpm to pass CW school. For 16 weeks I sat and taught myself how to copy CW on a typewriter and even got faster.
Enough thanks for the memories....Z/Jer

Oh, sorry great work on the contest...Z
