Rough Hunt this morning for Besco and BDA:cool:

I arranged to meet up with Besco at Horseshoe Bay this morning at 8 am for the 10:14 am low tide. When I got there it was pretty rough and Besco felt that it would be hard to keep his Infinium stable in these conditions so we had to come up with a plan B.

There is a marathon happening on the island today so we decided not to head to the other side of the island to try to avoid the surf. What to do? We decided to move a half mile east and see if we could get enough shelter from some of the rock outcroppings to hunt - off we went to Chaplin Bay.

Obviously no luck at Chaplin Bay and the clock was ticking towards the low tide. I remembered that there is a sheltered swimming hole a little further east at Jobsons Cove so away we went again in search of fertile hunting grounds. Now this was more like it. I found a tiny gold ring as my first target.

It didn't take us long to hunt the swimming hole clean as it is pretty small. We decided to check out Long Bay (just a little further east), no dice.

By this point we had a long walk back to the cars and Besco had to take care of some business in town so we headed back. We tallied up the loot and except for the tiny gold ring I found at the swimming hole, all we had was a bit of clad and a bunch of trash. A little gold is still better than none at all though, so we called it a successful hunt.

I was a little bummed out about the poor hunting conditions and subsequent results so after Besco left for town I decided to stop by Horseshoe Bay for a quick spin as the Excal is very stable regardless of the surf action. Well things had kicked up considerably in the last 4 hours and I was now facing 3 to 5 foot breakers but I'm a little nuts and more than a little stubborn so into the washing machine I went. I just couldn't break through the surf deep enough to reach the good targets. I found quite a few pulltabs and a washer but that was it, skunked.:veryangry: I gave it one last shot and was out around chest deep digging a target when a rogue wave snuck up on me and sent me for a spill. It was all I could do to hang on to my Excal and scoop as well as keeping my Raybans from joining the hundreds of other sunglasses at the bottom of Horseshoe Bay. I came up spitting water with a wrench in my back and a cramped calf muscle from the tumble:stars: - it was time to throw in the towel as it was already 2 hours past low tide. Here's what it looked like at Horseshoe Bay 12:30 pm.

I'll bet you're glad you went to work instead of Horseshoe, Eh Besco!

Cheers All,

There were cuts at several beaches we hit today but they are not perpendicular to the shore so there is little to find there in my experience. Everything seems to settle at the break between soft sand and hard which is usually neck deep (sometimes deeper).
I'm going back out solo tomorrow once I heal up a little, still gimping around a bit.

Good Luck at Surf Church,
