rookie looking for a starter kit

i am looking to get a metal detector, i don't know anyone who knows anything about metal detectors. so my question is, what should i buy?

info on me, i am not worried about price although i would like to spend under $400 if i can get a quality buy for that. never even used a metal detector before but i have always been interested. i am a satellite technician so i am not scared of high tech devices. i will probably use it a couple times a month but if it is as fun as i hope it will be, i may use it a couple of times per week including vacations. i live in southwest michigan and this is where i will be doing most of my searching. don't know what i will be searching for, i asume i will be looking for whatever is easiest right off the bat until i learn the ropes

i know sometimes forums don't like to have posts that push products. if this is the case than does anyone know where i can go to get some good and honest info on brands?
thanks

Everyone high on the Garrett Ace 250, I have a friend who also is new to the hobby and the ace is right for him. Good price about $200.00 and a user friendly detector that will treat you right. A lot of good talk about this detector.

As each forum is full of guys that like specific brands. They will alnost always suggest the detector brand of the forum you're on.

The Fisher CZ models are powerful and simple to use. You can usually pick one of them up used on ebay or the classifieds on here for around $400.

The Garrett Ace 250, as Jerry mentioned, is a good low buck unit.

The Minelab Musketeer Advantage and Xterra 30 are good units and will go near $400 or less for the Advantage.

Read about all the different brands and models before buying and pick the one that best fits your needs and desires.

Good Luck,
Dave
