Rons Meter on Sov GT

drystal

New member
Bought a used Sovereign GT and later a used Rons Meter with wiring but no instructions. The Sovereign works great on its own but when I hook up the meter with the RCA pin wiring splitter all I ever get on the display is 1, no matter what settings I try. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Ron is the moderator of this forum. Maybe he can help you. I have been using one of his meters for years and it sure does help me not dig a lot of trash that I was digging before it got it.

Turn on the meter without hooking up to the Sovereign. This meter is a multi meter to measure voltage and without it hooked up to the Sovereign is should read 000, this will tell you the meter is working, if it shows 1 then that is the overload on most meter. which is the voltage to high for what the meter is set at. I would also check the battery of the meter as it has a battery either in it or on the back of the meter. with it not hooked up to the Sovereign and you get 1 when you turn on the Sovereign you have a bad meter. Make sure the wires are not connected to the meter, if it shows 000 the meter is working , if it shows 000 with the wires connected then hook it up to the GT and if it shows 1 then there is a short in the wiring where it ic connected to the GT. It is a process of elimination until you find where the problem is.
The meter is a voltage meter and it is spliced between the control box and the coil so it is taking the sample of the voltage to let you know my the numbers on the meter what the tone is. Without it some of the tones are too close to tell the difference in and you can read the numbers to get a better ID.
When you get it figured out so it reads other then 1 (thats overload on a digital meter) it should read 1.79-1.80 on a clad quarter or dime, I beleive the nickle will be 1.44 or so in band 2 on the GT as it is close to what my SunRay meter is. if it is not when the meter has to be re-calibrated which depends on the date the meter was made as there is a difference on how you do this.
One piece of advice if new to the Sovereign is dont give up and learn what you can from experience as it will be well worth it in the end, just ask anyone that has kept a Sovereign with the 180 meter.

Good luck and if you got a problem with the meter feel free to ask as we will get it figured out.

Rick

Many thanks for the advice and encouragement. I turned the meter dial to the 20vdc scale and, surprise, i got numbers. What difference or why I dont know but it hit 1.79 on a clad quarter!!. I do think this machine could find money dug all the way to a foreign country!

Good to hear you got it figured out as like I say it is a voltage meter and some of Rons meter had the dial on front and unless set on the 20 volt scale it wont read correct. On his meters there is a decimal after the 1 while my SunRay read the 3 numbers with no decimal point so when we say the reading of 179-180 Ron meter will say 1.79-1.80 . All clad and silver will read 1.79-1.80 (if callibrated to 1.80 for a quarter)while the zinc pennies and IH read 1.76-1.77 while the nickles will be 1.44-1.46 and seem to have a tone that is smother sounding If you run freq 2, but on Freq 1 nickles will read higher I believe , so on my GT I run it in freq 2 and feel it works better for me. I use freq 1 when I get some interference from another detector or electrical.
When you know the GT well and go slow you will see some unreal depth and separation too. Now with the meter you will see some of those close tones that are hard to tell the difference in tone, but you will see the numbers on the meter and can ID the tones so easy.

Good Luck and feel if you get to know it we will be seeing some great finds by you in the future .

Drystal, if you are still having problems with your meter PM me a message. Send the meter to me and I'll be happy to fix it. I've estimate probably built a thousand of these meters. George has been of a lot of help. The new meters sold by Harbor Freight I used for a base are no longer made, they look the same but they can't be calibrated to 180. I have a few of these good base meters left. The Y cord connectors can be difficult to build , My meters usually hold up very well , only a couple have failed. I've slacked off on builds, but still repair or build a couple as needed. Thanks Ron

Deep wheat pennies will sometimes fail to read 179-180. But listen to the tones and swing the coil rapidly across the target and the numbers will tend to climb. end of may first week of june I worked an old home and dug 49 wheat pennies. the vast majority of them were deep and did not ring up with the high number but the numbers would climb and the tones tole me to Dig. Some times we have to let our ears tell us what to dig.

George, I've found that old heavy green crusted deep wheat's will read as low as 173. Even today there are a lot of old wheat pennies that were passed over and left as junk targets because the reading were too low especially those 1909 wheat's. HH Ron
