Finally got my Sovereign today and the 180 meter yesterday. Charging the battery up right now and then will attempt to calibrate in the morning. So...Do you use a clad quarter or a silver one? Then I have to wait. Having overnite company until next Monday. Arrrrrrrrgh.

xwy either silver or clad should both come up the same 180 on the meter, only difference is in the sound Jim :detecting:

Let the machine "warm up" for about five or six minutes or so before messing with the meter. I find that if I adjust it right at power up I have to re-calibrate several minutes later as the machine reaches what is called "steady state" in the HVAC field. Not going to hurt things to adjust it right off the bat, but it might be off a bit once the machine warms up, so check again after about ten minutes or so to see if things are still reading right. That's why I tell people to never mess with the meter after power up until it gets ran for a bit, as chances are it will read right when things warm up so long as you haven't bumped the calibration pot. It's not a good idea to keep tweaking with that pot all the time, as pots have a limited life based on the number of times they are adjusted. The more you play with them, the more they develop dead spots and thus make it harder and harder to calibrate.

John, the meter should already be calibrated. It could be off just a bit, but a small touch of the pot in the direction rather than a turn. The port cover requires a small Phillips and the pot inside use a very small standard screw driver. After you assembly your Gt and test your settings, install the Y cord from your box to the coil connector and connect the meter to the inlet and just lay next to your Sovereign and test a Quarter to see if it will give a 180.I got some business in Detroit and will give you a pm later. Thanks Ron

OK. Got a break. Hooked everything up and I think something's wrong. Numbers on the meter are going all over the place. It won't lock on anything. Have not touched the calibration screw.

Ron, thanks for the call. Looks like we got her going now.

John

Sounds like you got it figured out, but if you don't then it's probably EMI noise in or around the house. Even with sensitivity lowest or set to Auto in or around the house close by the EMI will cause the ID to jump around. I have to move into my backyard to get the VDI to stabilize in the lowest manual setting or even Auto due to EMI.
