Thanks guys, this watch means alot, I didn't get out on Saturday because i got the call that my son in laws mother lost her battle with cancer, so I went Sunday while I was hunting I got this super funny feeling and checked this spot out and found the watch. She was always amazed by the things I found , if I can getting it running and refurbed I will hand it down to him. Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year Scott

Many of those old radium dial watches were quite radio active and cooking at better than 10 micro sieverts per hour. I have tested some at 35 mSvts/hr which is very capable of damaging eye and skin tissue .
Just because it has been in the ground for a while does not mean that it is no longer active If the dial glass is intact and the paint still on the dial. These dials can remain radio active for thousands of years.

Thanks fisher I guess I better quit carrying that thing around in my pocket . I will see about getting it tested to see how hot it still is

Good idea.
Radium emits a good deal of beta and gamma radiation with Beta being predominant. The Beta will not pass through the steel back of the watch but will get through the perspex/glass dial cover. Gamma will go straight through the steel and perspex/glass.
I am a watch repairer and have seen several wrist radiation burns from radium painted watch dials.

I guess that old rancher was telling me the truth about that radium watch of his.:surprised:..great find, and a great forum full of knowledgeable people...great find Stryker!

Congratulations on a great find and glad it's the real deal. Glad to know about the damage one of these watches could do to somebody. That's spooky about the old timer's eye. No better find this time of year and glad you are going to pass it on. HH.

Wow! If ya can afford to get it repaired that would be a great trophy to wear !!! Otherwise you could obviously parley it into cash, just request a certificate authenticating it when its repaired.
Congrats & HH!!!
