ROD QUESTION

I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I just got an Explorer and the lower rod does not want to slide into the upper rod without alot of force and shaving off pieces of the lower rod. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks ahead of time.

chip when i first got mine i had the cam lock in the back instead of the front and make sure the cam lock is open all the way

Also, be sure the uuper shaft cam lock is on the topside. Although the unit looks neater with the cam lock on the bottom side, it could rub or apply pressure against the cable protruding from the slot on the lower cam shaft.

Make sure you dont have the coil cable to loosely looped.. it might cause jamming.. I generally spin the coils tight enough to slide easily in the rod before connecting to the control box, other than that and what the others said be happy its not too loose <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Thanks for the help guys. I did make sure the cam lock is positioned correctly. It almost seems like when the coil cable is installed in the lower shaft slot that it pushes out on the sides of the lower rod and causes a tight fit. I guess it isn't that big of deal. I should be happy it fits tight like Jim said. I was looking into getting a X-1 probe and it looks like that might solve the problem. It looks like you eliminate running the cable into the upper shaft.

I thought you were talking about the upper rod going into the control box.. if its the lower rod just put a little dish soap on the cable.. it will pop in all the way and slide east

HI, I just rec'd mine and had the same difficulty you describe so I just sat back analyzed what the cause could be and it was the coiled cable binding inside the upper shaft. I solved this by simply by sliding a short piece of 550 parachute cord thru the upper shaft and tying an overhand knot just under the spin nut on the end of the cable. I then just gently pulled the cable to free the binding and the shaft moved nicely. Once you see the plug end come thru just remove the parachute cord, connect to the head unit and finish your shaft installation. Good luck with the new detector!!!!

Thanks for all the responses. I havn't had much time to get back to it. I will give the suggestions a try.

I had the same problem with mine. To see scratches in your new rod shouldn't be a tragedy but it felt a little like wrecking your first car. I did that several times ;-] I had to file a small burr off the inside of the upper shaft. It's still a little tight but I'm not peeling carrots when I assemble it now.
Hope this helps, Okie
