You may or may not find this interesting in relation to our discussion a couple of nights ago. I went to move my treasure chest (tackle box) and the handle fell off. Too heavy with clad. Rather than continue to buy more and bigger containers to hold my loot I opted to take some to bank. I had a little bit of a difficult time parting with the coins (9 rolls of Quarters and 2 rolls of dimes.) I put the C note into the newly repaired treasure chest and don't plan on spending any until after my last day of detecting, probably November or December.

Maybe I will have a more difficult time parting with the gold and silver. And gold keeps going up and up.

Probably not very interesting after rereading.

Best,
Chris

I use my clad to buy batteries and give to my kids for doing chores. Until recently I haven't found much gold but I am really thinking hard about selling the gold since the price is so high. I used to race Radio controlled cars and fly RC airplanes. That hobby cost me thousands of dollars. At least a detectorist can make back some or all their investment - even more!! What a hobby! There's nothing wrong in trading your coins in for paper or even a gold coin or two.

I just got used to the idea of having everything that I found in that tackle box and I was initially saving the task of tumbling and rolling coins for when the ground freezes. Running out of space is a good thing I guess. Now that I've started I reckon I'll turn in everything I found with the 250 and start over again with the 2500. Lot's of space for folding money and bills weigh, what, a gram?

I don't know why gold is moving up like it is right now. I expected a small increase when the Fed lowered rates but it is up a ton since then. I asked for advice on selling scrap jewelry over at the Beach & Water Detecting Board and found a few of that group uses a company called Midwest Refining. They have a web site and I called to get all the dope. I will either send it to them or sell it on eBay. I have one real nice small diamond ring I'm going to keep for a memento.

Chris

BTW The first belt, O-ring or whatever you want to call it is still going strong after almost 60 hours of operation on the new Tumbler. I have 6 more pounds of Ace 250 clad and about 1100 pennies to go.

Why is your post called Rocsoe Bookbinder? 60 hours of tumbling? Not for me. I put my coins in my sand scoop, shake them to get the dirt out and they go straight to the coin machine at the bank. Simple, fast and easy. All that saved time gives me more swinging time. Below is a shot of some of the last cleaned ones I took in.

Rosco and I had a long discussion where he said he kept all his loot, except clad, and I said I would sell all mine without emotional attachment. Someone even asked when we were planning to pick out furniture (very funny BTW.) Just wanted to let him know I understand his POV after cashing in some clad. That's all. That 100 bucks in quarters and a few dimes is the first thing I ever found metal detecting that I ever parted with. I kept all my Bounty Hunter loot in a small box and never turned it in because I never filled the box. When it died and I got my Ace 250 I never would have believed I would get so many clad coins so quickly. Not to mention almost an ounce of gold rings (half ounce of pure gold.)

I actually like tumbling coins. It's interesting to see how they clean up. That part of my second post on this thread was meant for a few guys who said the belt would break on my tumbler fairly quickly. That 60 hours cleaned up about 18 pounds of coins. I ran it for another 6 hours after that and it will run until I get home from what I am hoping is a 4-6 hour hunt this morning. The tellers at my bank and I always chat and when I mentioned I was really into MDing they asked if I would show them some of my loot. I had my coins in a bait box at that time and brought it in to show off. They said they would take them just like that except for the corroded zinc pennies. I still like cleaning them up first.

I am still trying to make connections between posters on this board. I still mix up some of the more prolific posters. Are you and Rosco brothers? I'll get it all sorted out one day.

I always read your posts carefully, awhistler. I have gotten a lot of good tips from you. Nice to have experienced MDers to assist with all my questions.

I also realize my posts are on the long side and I tend to post thoughts from other threads or whatever is on my mind.

Good luck this weekend!

The guys on the board give me a lot of flak for turning in my coins un-tumbled. It's an ongoing :poke:

I guess the cat is out of the bag. Rosco is my brother. He lives a few states away but we have been able to detect together once since we started. We have one of those big brother / little brother rivalry deals going on.

I'm glad you picked up some tips from my posts. This site is great for learning. Lots of very experienced MDers share their tips on here.

I have plenty of time long posts, keep them coming.

But we aren't related. Look how Awhitster does with all his detector finds and coin roll hunting. Teaching your younger brother anything in this case didn't happen...... :starwars:
